Dozens of protesters faced off with motorists and police this afternoon on Colfax and Broadway. In a showdown that began shortly after 3 p.m., the marchers blocked both lanes of Colfax near 15th Street.

Waves of police officers on foot, bicycle and horseback directed the protesters off Colfax Avenue and through Civic Center toward the Capitol, with drivers honking as they waited to drive east.

Once Colfax was cleared to travel, the jam resumed on Broadway between Colfax and 14th Avenue.

By 4 p.m., southbound traffic on Broadway was going nowhere fast, and was being diverted onto Colfax. Shortly after 4, traffic was flowing south on Broadway, but northbound Lincoln has been shut down between 14th and Colfax.

Amid the tension, several women could be seen walking young children in strollers through the armies of officers and protesters in Civic Center.

In addition, a military helicopter was seen circling the park after the showdown began.

By 4:15, the area had calmed somewhat.

These people aren't democrats. They are just malcontents who have found a place where people will look at them. There is nothing that will please them, they need something to complain about to feel of purpose instead of being productive in life.

What a bunch of losers--causing the waste of valuable resources (police, gasoline due to traffic congestion, etc) all b/c they don't have a life nor know how to contribute in a meaningful way to society.

While I personally not in Denver protesting this week, I don't want to deny anyone the right to protest. It is called freedom of speech. They understand that when it gets out of hand some will be arrested.

The item I picked up on is the fact that a military helicopter was circling the park. What did they intend to do, somehow controll the crowd with military force? Isn't the doubling of the Denver police force, the influx of Secret Service and federal law enforcement into the city enough? Now the military? All this just for the DNC.

Great photo Tim Hussin! I am just trying to imagine how nice it would be to see that cop get a piece of that skinny little vegan nerd with his shirt off in front of him.

What a bunch of pathetic, drug-addled losers!

And, by the way, if teachers think THEY are underpaid, they ought to walk a day in these cop's shoes... It is crazy what they put up with...
