"You'll never know. I mentioned (Clint) Barmes earlier in the year and he was locked up for a week thinking about it. We're just going to grab somebody, shove them back there and we're going to have to all move forward together with it. Barmes isn't the guy."
Clint Hurdle, Rockies manager, on who would serve as the team's third catcher in an emergency. Starting catcher Chris Iannetta had no backup for the final four innings Sunday after Yorvit Torrealba was used as a pinch hitter in the eighth.
6 shutout innings thrown by the Rockies bullpen during the team's 4-3, 12-inning win on Sunday. Jason Grilli, Manuel Corpas, Brian Fuentes and winner Ryan Speier threw one scoreless inning each and Taylor Buchholz added two. The group allowed only one hit and had eight strikeouts, including three apiece from Corpas and Fuentes.
GETTING CLOSER
Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez took steps toward regaining the dominant form he flashed during July, allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts in six innings, though he did issue four walks.
Jimenez enjoyed three perfect innings but was touched for one run in each of his other three innings, including an unearned run aided by his own error in the fifth and a solo home run by the Reds' Chris Dickerson in the sixth. Pitch efficiency remains a hurdle for Jimenez, who threw 94 pitches and threw more than 100 pitches in each of his previous two starts, which lasted six innings and five innings, respectively.
ETC.
Reliever Matt Herges (lower back stiffness) is scheduled to throw in the bullpen today and Wednesday at San Francisco. If Herges does not suffer a setback, he likely will join Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday in Las Vegas for a rehabilitation assignment. Herges last pitched Aug. 17 and is eligible to be reinstated Sept. 1, when the rosters can be expanded. . . . Reds starter Johnny Cueto did not allow a hit in three innings before leaving the game because of a sore right (throwing) triceps tendon. . . . Reds closer Francisco Cordero attended to a personal matter and was not with the team Sunday. . . . Stewart extended his hitting streak to eight games, tying his career best, and Holliday extended his hitting streak to six games. . . . Atkins extended his hitting streak at Coors Field to 19 games. . . . Closer Brian Fuentes struck out the side in the 11th inning and has recorded strikeouts against 35 of the past 74 batters he has faced. . . . Right-hander Manuel Corpas lowered his ERA to 1.50 in 30 innings since July 19. . . . As sloppy as the Reds played, it was not the worst defensive performance ever turned in by a Rockies opponent. The team record for errors by an opponent was set by Atlanta, which committed seven (four by Mark DeRosa) on May 2, 2004 at Coors Field.
