Outlaws falter in MLL title game

For the second time in three seasons, the prize eluded the grasp of the Denver Outlaws.
Jeff Zywicki scored six goals to power the Rochester Rattlers to a 16-6 victory against the Outlaws on Sunday in the Major League Lacrosse championship game, witnessed by 8,481 at Harvard Stadium in west Boston's Allston neighborhood.
The Outlaws also lost in the MLL championship game two years ago, 23-12 to the Philadelphia Barrage in Carson, Calif.
Denver reached the title game with a 13-12 win against the Los Angeles Riptide on Saturday, also at Harvard Stadium.
Zywicki scored three goals during a six-goal outburst in the third period as the Rattlers broke open a tight match.
The Outlaws were trailing 6-5 at the end of the first half, only to be outscored10-1 the rest of the way.
Denver was held scoreless for the first 28:15 of the second half before Matt Brown converted a feed from Ryan Powell past Rochester goalkeeper Brett Queener.
Queener, who played the second half for the Rattlers, made 10 saves and recorded an assist on Zywicki's fifth goal of the game.
Rochester's Joe Walters was named the game's most valuable player after contributing two goals and two assists.
Rattlers attackman John Grant Jr. recorded four goals and an assist in the victory for Rochester, which became the first U.S. city to win a lacrosse championship in three different leagues.
Outlaws attackman Powell led Denver with one goal and two assists, and Brown added a goal and an assist.
