Regional Scene: Area colleges get soccer season started

It all starts again today for the University of Colorado, University of Denver, Colorado College and University of Wyoming women's soccer teams.
The region's four Division I teams open their regular seasons today, all seeking conference titles and NCAA tournament berths.
The Buffaloes face 20th-
ranked Florida at 4 p.m. at Prentup Field in Boulder. Sun Belt Conference favorite DU meets New Mexico at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Field in Denver. The Conference USA-affiliated Tigers host Oklahoma at 4 p.m. at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs and the Cowgirls will open at Western Michigan at 9 a.m. MDT.
RAMS RANKED The Colorado State volleyball team - 23-8 last season - is ranked 17th nationally in the CBS College Sports Network/American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll.
* The Air Force men's water polo team - 15-14 last season - is ranked 16th in the Collegiate Water Polo Association preseason poll.
MURPHY'S LAW Elbert resident Steve Murphy recorded a one-stroke victory Wednesday in the Colorado Golf Association's Senior Stroke Play Championship, overcoming a final-round 77.
Murphy finished with a three-
round 213, one stroke ahead of Colorado Springs resident Richard Gorbell and Aurora resident Greg Goode, to add a second Senior Stroke Play crown to his resume. He also won in 2006.
* Evergreen golfer Kathy Malpass shot a four-over 75 to take medalist honors Wednesday in the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur sectional qualifier at The Ranch Country Club in Westminster.
Cindy Pallatino, Virginia Love, Nancy Ziereis, Beth Clippinger, Charlotte Jorgensen, Susan Jennings, Liz Kennedy, Shirley Schaller and Shelley Earl also qualifed for the Sept. 20-25 tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
TOUR TITLE Boulder rider Jon Baker clinched the Tour of Colorado cycling title after the series' final races last weekend in Boulder, outpointing Lafayette resident Kevin Nicol.
Parker rider Susannah Gordon won the women's crown, finishing ahead of Denver cyclist Megan Hottman.
BIG IN VALLEY Loveland resident Kelly Christensen won the Valley 5000 road race in Loveland on Aug. 15, finishing the 5-kilometer run in 16 minutes, 22 seconds. Loveland runner Laura Trembleay won the women's race in 19:45.
* Dublin, Ireland, resident Owen Brady won the Eldorado Springs Cure 4 Mile race on Aug. 14, finishing in 21:33. Dublin, Ireland, runner Annette Kealy won the women's portion in 23:53.
SOX FALTER Cory Sullivan recorded four hits as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox's five-run rally in the eighth inning fell short in an 8-5 loss Wednesday to the Las Vegas 51s at Security Service Field.
