Regional Scene: Highlands Ranch resident Waner on list for Wade Trophy

Duke senior guard Abby Waner, a ThunderRidge High School graduate, has been named to the 25-player preseason watch list for the Wade Trophy, awarded to the top Division I women's basketball player of the year.

Waner started all 31 of her games played in 2007-08, while averaging 10.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals. She led Duke with 49 three-pointers made, 117 assists and 80 steals.

HERMANN WATCH University of Colorado forward Nikki Marshall, a Skyline High School graduate, and Texas A&M goalie Kristin Arnold, a Cherry Creek High School graduate, have been named to the 47-player preseason watch for the Hermann Trophy for women's soccer athletes in Division I.

Marshall, a Mead resident, had nine goals and two assists for CU last season. Arnold, a Centennial resident, led the Big 12 Conference with seven shutouts last season.

SKYHAWKS FAVORED The Fort Lewis men's and women's soccer teams were both picked to finish first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, according to polls of league coaches.

The Metro State women were picked second and the Roadrunners men's team was picked third. The Regis University men were picked second and the Rangers women's team was picked fifth.

The Colorado School of Mines women tied for third with Colorado State-Pueblo, and the Orediggers men's team was picked fourth. The Colorado Christian men's and women's team were both picked eighth.

MURPHY LEADS Elbert resident Steve Murphy fired his second straight round of 68 to take a five-stroke lead in the Colorado Golf Association's Senior Stroke Play Championship at Heritage Todd Creek in Thornton on Tuesday.

Murphy has recorded a two-round 136 heading into today's final round, ahead of Colorado Springs resident Richard Gorbell at 141.

* Barrett Lais has been hired as an assistant men's golf coach at the University of Denver.

NLL REALIGNMENT The Colorado Mammoth will remain in the National Lacrosse League's West Division under a realignment announced Tuesday.

The Minnesota Swarm will move to the West with the addition of the expansion Boston Blazers to the East.

KHAN HONORED Squash legend Hashim Khan, 92, will receive Pakistan's Award of High Distinction in a ceremony Sunday at the Denver Athletic Club.
