It's been a summer of blockbuster debuts, including The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and The Lace Reader. Now add another: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The novel, by first-time author Mary Ann Shaffer (who died before the book was published) and her children's-author niece Annie Barrows, revolves around a woman corresponding with residents on the island of Guernsey about their experiences during World War II. It hits No. 5 on PW's list this week.
