Move over, Reese's
If you find yourself under the boardwalk in Santa Cruz, Calif., don't miss the latest sensation: chocolate-covered bacon. Joseph Marini III, a fourth-generation candymaker, found that the secret to his bacon bonbons is to make sure the bacon stays crisp, not chewy. He's not alone in wallowing in this new combination. Over at the Minnesota State Fair, Famous Dave's is offering Pig Lickers - dark chocolate-covered bacon pieces sprinkled with sea salt.

Bottle battle: Once again, the Boston Beer Co. is having trouble making up its mind. For the fourth consecutive year, the brewer of Sam Adams is asking beer drinkers to decide which of two new brews should be rolled out nationally. This time, it's a berries-vs.-beans smackdown: At three upcoming tastings, you can sample the Blackberry Witbier or Coffee Stout and vote for the one you'd like to see added to the brewery's lineup of specialty beers. Tastings are set for 5 to 6 p.m. Friday at Pyramid Liquors, Littleton; 4:30 to 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at Bar Louie, Westminster; and 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at Meridian Wine and Spirits, Lafayette. The winner will be announced in late October. For details, go to samueladams.com.
Brings home the bacon, fries it up in the pan
Rachael Ray makes more than the venerable Wolfgang Puck these days in yearly earnings. According to Forbes.com, Ray's empire brings in $18 million a year, Puck's a paltry $16 million.
Feel the burn
The Hallmark Channel is presenting For the Love of Grace on Aug. 30, a story about a firefighter who's also a gourmet chef for his engine company. Producers of the movie also gathered recipes from real firefighters into For the Love of Grace Gourmet Firehouse Cookbook. Among the recipes are two from Jennifer Sanderson, who served with Denver Fire Station 27 for 10 years and is now a technician for the department's fire prevention bureau. The cookbook is available free as a download from hallmarkchannel.com.
Local eats
Gov. Bill Ritter has declared August as Colorado Proud Month. With the height of the produce season upon us, now's the time to think local. You may know about peaches, but did you know that we are one of the nation's top lettuce producers? And that we rank fifth nationally in potatoes, and sixth in onions?
