Rockies trainer Keith Dugger was upbeat after getting back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins' review of first baseman Todd Helton's situation.

He said Watkins confirmed the problem with the L5 disk, and recommended continuation of the rehab program Dugger had in place.

"The problem we have is we don't have a time frame before us for stepping back into baseball activities," Dugger said. "We have to move step by step. Todd felt really good (Tuesday)."

MOVE AWAITS

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba was behind the plate for the second time in four games on Tuesday. Rockies manager Clint Hurdle wants to give Torrealba a good test of the slight meniscus tear in his left knee that flared up last week.

If all goes well, Adam Melhuse, called up on Thursday when Torrealba wasn't available, figures to go back to Triple-A Colorado Springs when outfielder Scott Podsednik is activated from the disabled list later this week.

"We will give it a little more time, but we need to move ahead," Hurdle said.

MONEY MATTERS

The Dodgers reportedly are picking up only $900,000 of the $2.2 million left on right-hander Greg Maddux's contract, San Diego eating the remainder. But that's more than the Dodgers had to pay for Manny Ramirez from Boston and Casey Blake from Cleveland, both of whom had their remaining salaries picked up by their former teams.

Etc.

Matt Holliday was 4-for-5 with a home run and double, the 12th four-hit game of his career. . . . Stewart, accompanied by outfielder Seth Smith, equipment man Joe Diaz and video man Brian Jones, spent part of Monday's off day watching the USC football team work out. "I'm just a big USC fan," said Stewart, who opted to sign with the Rockies instead of attending USC. "I'd never been to a football practice and wanted to see one." Smith said the regime wasn't much different than Mississippi, where Smith was the backup quarterback to Eli Manning. . . . First baseman Joe Koshanky was the Triple-A Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for Aug. 11-17, hitting .611 with four home runs, 12 runs scored and 15 RBI in 18 at-bats. Koshansky leads the PCL with 110 RBI. . . . Hawpe's two-run home run in the third gave the Rockies at least one home run in 12 of the last 13 games, including each of the last two games after having a season-best 10-game home run streak snapped on Saturday. . . . The crowd of 46,687 on Tuesday pushed the Dodgers season attendance over three million for the 13th consecutive season. . . . Outfielder Scott Podesednik was 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and stolen base in Triple-A Colorado Springs' 5-4, 10-inning loss at Salt Lake on Tuesday. It was his second game on a medical rehab assignment. He went 2-for-5 with an RBI and stolen base on Monday. He is expected to be activated this weekend. . . . Outfielder Dexter Fowler went 3-for-3 in the USA's 4-2 victory against Taiwan in the Olympics, coming up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle

I'm really looking forward to Fowler being called up. Next to the long ball, the players' speed may be my favorite aspect of the MLB game. I know I complain a lot about the front office, but they really have done a stand up job in regards to developing young talent in the field. And they've done it for a long time now.
