Rookie receiver Royal also excels for Denver

Apparently the Broncos like vanilla just fine.

And quarterback Jay Cutler, who has routinely brushed aside almost all things preseason with a nod to "nothing but vanilla defenses,'' certainly scooped up the Dallas' Cowboys offerings Saturday night.

Cutler hit his first 12 passes and led two scoring drives – Matt Prater missed a 49-yard field on the last play of the first half that would have finished a third – as the Broncos came away with a 23-13 preseason win at Invesco Field at Mile High.

"I'm not real happy overall,'' Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said.

"We made some strides, but obviously we're not there yet, but we'll keep going,'' Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said.

The Broncos are now 1-1 in the preseason and will face the Brett Favre-less Green Bay Packers Friday night at Invesco.

For his evening's work Cutler went 16-of-20 passing for 178 yards and a touchdown pass. Cutler's passer rating was 120.4 and he was not sacked.

"We're doing a lot of stuff, we've got a lot of offense,'' Cutler said. "We’re trying to kind of figure out what direction we want to go with it, kind of picking and choosing the plays.''

The game marked the end of a few days worth of work with a team that is considered one of the NFC's powerhouses. The Broncos practiced against the Cowboys Wednesday and Thursday in the week leading up to the game.

Cutler was sharp from the outset, spreading the ball around with completions to seven different receivers in the opening half, led by Brandon Marshall's six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown before halftime. Rookie Eddie Royal, who had two receptions on passes from Cutler, continued to stake a claim for a starting spot with a 35-yard reception up the Broncos sideline on Denver's first possession of the night.

"He's a go-getter, he picked up the offense quick,'' Cutler said.

Running backs Selvin Young and Andre Hall split carries – nine and seven respectively – in the starting offense. Young had 36 yards rushing in his night's work while Hall finished with 24 to go with a 1-yard touchdown run.

All in all it was a smooth, efficient evening for the Broncos starters, who now have three preseason touchdown drives in their limited work. Shanahan kept the starters in a little longer than expected Saturday night, with the group playing the entire first half.

Shanahan considered taking the starters out after the team's second scoring drive, but when an opportunity presented itself to run a two-minute drill he kept them on the field. The Broncos took over at their own 22-yard line and moved to the Dallas 31 in seven plays, but Prater missed the kick to finish the half.

Prater has now missed a kick in each of the Broncos preseason games – a 30-yard miss in Houston to go with Saturday night's 49-yard attempt, both on his first attempts in the game.

Prater did make 29- , 19- and 43-yard kicks later in the game.

Defensively the Broncos held the Cowboys' high-powered offense in check. The Cowboys did play it safe much of the time, but Tony Romo went 6-of-9 for just 33 yards while Marion Barber rushed for 22 yards on his five carries.

Romo and Barber were taken out of the game early and Brad Johnson finished out the first half at quarterback for the Cowboys starters.

The two teams were a little rough around the edges as well, combining for 12 penalties in the first half, with the Broncos having a stretch late in the first quarter when they had penalties from three different players on three consecutive plays.

Broncos punter Brett Kern also had a 36-yard run in the third quarter when a blocked punt bounced right back into his arms. The Cowboys defense also had an interception wiped out by an illegal contact penalty in the third quarter as well.

The team's most significant injury appeared to be tight end Daniel Graham, who suffered a right hamstring injury on the Broncos' first series. He will be evaluated more Sunday.

Safety Josh Barrett, who briefly left the game with a right ankle injury but later returned, was taken for X-rays following the game as a precaution.

Rookie running back Anthony Alridge, who was held out of Friday's practice because of a sore hamstring and was not in uniform Saturday night. Cornerback Champ Bailey (hamstring), center Tom Nalen (knee), linebacker Boss Bailey (ankle) and Jackson (ankle) were also among those held out as expected.

It don't much matter becuase since he missed most of last season he technicly is still a rookie with very little playing experience. No one on the D-line shined except Elvis but the team played well together against the biggest and best o-line in the league no matter what sting was in. Moss will come along later like most linemen in the league, we alternate linemen so he'll get experience and if he don't produce then he will be gone like most first round draft picks in the NFL that can't live up to their potential. Then will draft another till we get one that does and that is how the NFL works. Honestly though I think he will be a late bloomer.

Well - There you go. Obviously another miserable and looooong season coming up. We can tell by the mediocre performance against Dallas in another vitally important preseason game. The Donkeys only managed a 14-7 advantage in the first half with the "starters," Cutler and crew could only do 16-20 for 178 yds, two TDs and no ints and Prater obviously can't kick (where is Rich Karlis when you need him?). And that miserable D actually let the Cowgirls score a touchdown and could only muster an int. in holding the Cowgirls out of the endzone towards the end of the game. And that bunch of no-names! SIX, count them SIX penalties for a whoping 36 yds. in this game. Why can't Shanny get these guys to play more disciplined. Why can't we get a forward thinking owner like Al Davis and a personnel guy with a flair for choosing character players like the genius in Cincinnati? What a bunch of losers our Broncs and their coach are. OR, maybe we should assume we're on the way to the Super Bowl because we beat Dallas in the 2nd preseason game! It's bandwagon time guys... time to get back on and make flight reservations for Tampa!

But u know great players when you see one. Take Eddie Royal for a good example. It doesn't take long for you guys to see how much of a special player he is. And he's a rookie. So find excuses for Moss if you want. He should be playing at a higher level then ever before. Its always a problem when you don't see improvement in a player! Tell it like it is. Everyone is obviously nervous about Prater and his field goal kicking, after Elam skedaddled out of town. Here are the stats for both kickers and you decide if we should keep Prater or bring in Jay Feely.
Prater is 6/8 for the pre-season, which is 75%.
Elam is an 80.6% career kicker.
On average, a kicker has roughly 30 attempts on field goals, per season. Let’s break that down. Elam would make 24.18 kicks per year, and Prater would make 22.5 kicks per year. You decide two extra field goals. Should he stay or should he go? Could be two games, or it could be meaningless. Who knows? But, he has a leg for distance and kick-offs.
Oh, Jay Feely is an 80.8% career kicker.

Ramsey and Moss terrible and I worry about Nalen's knee (but love Wiegmann). Harris graded out very good after last week. Holland looks fat and played sloppy. Erikson another good game.

The Broncos will make some noise this year if for no other reason than the playmakers they have on offense. Cutler, Marshall, Royal, Scheffler, and Young are all playmakers. The O line is young but very talented and has alot of potential. Running back is the biggest question on Offense and losing Torian for the start of the season hurts but with Young, Pittman, and Hall they have depth and talent there. Whether they make the playoffs or not will hinge on the defense. I think that they have made some significant additions to the defense, albeit, additions like Roberston and Koutouvides are not guaranteed to take them to the promised land and players like Moss, Thomas, and Crowder need to step up and at the very least play a role in that rotation of the D line.
I like the way Shanahan has conducted the offseason this year as opposed to the past where older veterans like Adams and Rice were brought in with the hope that they had some gas left in the tank. And I really like the draft this year. There may be some suprises from this class either this season or in the next couple of seasons. Clady's a stud, Royal looks great, Lichtensteiger may be a contributor in the long term, and Hillis and Torian both have potential.
All in all, I think that the Broncos can give the Chargers a run for their money this year and I think that we will be in the post season.

It's nice when we can make another team play away from our strengths. Easier to predict what they will do and it limits their game. We have a lot of talent in our RB's. This will be a powerful offense. I can't wait to watch them when Marshall is back from his suspension. I want to see this machine with all it's gears working.

In my perspective, the defensive line has the farthest to go before becoming truly effective, followed by the entire defense as a whole. My sense is Shanahan is really building something that can be special with the offense. It would be nice to see his defensive draft picks pan out to the extent the offensive picks appear to be (note only two current defensive starters are original Broncos picks, the cause of so many defensive free agents - other team's riff-raff - on the team). Most exciting, Cutler appears ready to take that quantum leap to elite status (don't want to get ahead of myself here), and with Marshall and Royal, especially, the offensive future seems bright. However, yesterday was simply a preseason game. Let's see how the team progresses in the next couple of weeks. Eating that elephant one bite at a time.

Indeed, since '77 the Broncos have had 17 regular seasons with 10 or more wins. I don't think the vaunted Pats can say that... and most others can't either. Most fans around the country would LOVE to have a team with the consistency and history of the Broncos (SIX Super Bowl appearances!)... a history of pretty good guys--despite a few exceptions along the way--on the field, too (again - maybe the whiners would like an owner like Crazy Al or coaches/personnel guys like the geniuses in Cincinnati who thrive on putting together teams of felons???) Personally, I think Denver is looking better on all sides of the ball. I want to see a little more at our MLB position before I make a decision of how that's working out. I want to see Denver's D when they are all healthy (Boss, Champ, Dre, Abdullah, Robertson). We ought to be very strong. I wish Torain didn't get hurt because I would have liked to see what he could do. I want to see Hillis work. All in good time.
