Air Force report: Quintana's crash course

AIR FORCE ACADEMY - Air Force suddenly is thin at tight end with starter Travis Dekker out until mid-October with a fractured ankle and sophomore Steve Shaffer likely permanently shelved because of concussions.
So junior Sean Quintana, who is listed as the starting X receiver, has been spending time at tight end in recent practices.
"It's going pretty well," Quintana said. "I'm picking it up faster than I thought I would."
The physical Quintana plays bigger than he is (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) Falcons coach Troy Calhoun said, and that made using him at tight end an intriguing prospect even before the injuries.
Meet and greet
Calhoun admitted before the Mountain West Conference Kickoff Luncheon this week that his mind probably would drift a bit during the program to X's and O's and the injury status of some of his players.
But he also acknowledged that such events are part of his job. And, according to Derm Coll, Air Force's associate athletic director for external relations, Calhoun has embraced his off-field responsibilities.
"He's better than any coach I've seen when it comes to wanting to be out in the community," Coll said. "He's constantly thinking of ways to be involved."
