JAZZ: Pianist Cowell to get knockout support

Pianist Stanley Cowell is one of those players whose talent greatly exceeds his name recognition.
Cowell has worked over the years with drummer Max Roach's band, the quintet co-led by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and saxophonist Harold Land, the Heath Brothers and saxophonist Art Pepper's group. But I first seriously encountered his sound with the cooperative band Music Inc. that featured the pianist, trumpeter Charles Tolliver, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jimmy Hopps (who, by the time he moved to Denver, was known as Jimmi EsSpirit).
Thursday, Cowell begins a two-night stay at Dazzle, 930 Lincoln St., with knockout support from drummer Nasheet Waits (the son of drummer Freddie Waits) and bassist Tarus Mateen (who spent time in singer Betty Carter's trio and traveling musical academy).
The pianist/educator (and co-founder of Strata-East Records along with Tolliver) performs at 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 22 ($25, 303-839-5100).
ALSO ON TAP: This evening, the Genuine Jazz and Wine Tasting Festival in Breckenridge begins with a concert in the Ten Mile Room. Guitarist Stanley Jordan is on tonight's bill that starts at 9 p.m. along with saxophonist Marion Meadows. Saturday, the second indoor concert features saxophonists Steve Cole and Jeff Kashiwa. Then, on Sunday, there's a morning indoor concert at 9:45 a.m. with the Voices of Faith Choir featuring singer Sheryl Renee and saxophonist Meadows. Tickets are available as a three-event package ($65-$89) or individually for each show ($24-$39, 866-464-2626).
There is also free music around Maggie Pond at the Village at Breckenridge Resort on Saturday and Sunday starting at 11 a.m. and running through the early evening hours (genuinejazz.com).
* This week also finds trumpeter Nate Birkey returning home to Colorado on Wednesday, when he performs at Nissi's, 2675 N. Park Drive, in Lafayette, with a quartet that has Jeff Jenkins on piano, Ken Walker on bass and Paul Romaine on drums. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. ($10/$12 day of show, 303-665-2757).
* Saxophonist Lynn Baker leads the Rocky Mountain Repertoire Orchestra in some time travel of their own, reliving the 1950s classic sound of the Stan Kenton Orchestra. This concert takes place at the Cherokee Ranch and Castle, 6113 N. Daniels Park Road in Sedalia, on Saturday and includes a tour of the facility, wine tasting and a buffet dinner ($95, 303-688-5555). Tours and dinner are at 6:30 p.m. The music is at 8 p.m.
* Saturday also finds the Seattle-based drummer Jeremy Jones settling in at Dazzle at 7 and 9 p.m. to celebrate the release of his CD Awakening to Life. ($12, $25 including CD).
