Dining briefs: Foraging at the DNC

This week and next, I'll be your go-to girl for all the details on wining and dining and supping and sipping during the Democratic National Convention. If you plan to run from all the action, this won't concern you.

But for those of you who stick around to rock the vote, stalk celebrities, protest (either peacefully or in full voice) or drunkenly debate the differences between the Endangered Elephant martini at Elway's at the Ritz-Carlton and the Obamapolitan at Dixons Downtown Grill, this cheat sheet is for you:

Elway's at the Ritz-Carlton 1881 Curtis St.

* The Platform: Whether you're noshing from Elway's food menu, getting liquefied from the drink roster or lucky enough to slumber in one of the Ritz-Carlton's glitzy new rooms, you can expect cocktails like the Barack on the Rocks, the Changing Tide, the O'Pama Granite martini and Media Madness as well as Obamalettes, Ba'Rack shrimp appetizers, "Yes We Can!" pancakes, Ballot Box Brownies and Campaign '08 trail mix, complete, of course, with blue M&M's.

Dixons Downtown Grill 1610 16th St.

* The Platform: From now until the convention ends, the bartenders at Dixons are pouring DNC - damn nice cocktails - to anyone with a propensity for democracy, specifically in the alcoholic form. Here's a short sampling of what the mixologists are concocting: Blue State of Mind, Smokin' Dean, Margaritter, Obamapolitan, Cuba Liberal, Rodham Sockem and the Hickenstooper. Clever, eh? Want to know whether you're getting vodka, gin or tequila? Go here: dixonsrestaurant.com.

Marriott City Center 1701 California St.

* The Platform: During prime-time check-in (about 2 to 6 p.m.) Aug. 24, the Marriott City Center will host a complimentary lobby buffet - but there's a twist. The kitchen located a Santa Fe Railroad car menu that dates back to July 1908, when Denver hosted its first Democratic National Convention.

And apparently everything old is back in vogue, because that menu boasts lobster, prime rib, squab, mashed potatoes, asparagus and apple pie.

The chefs here are modernizing the menu, but you can still get a taste of what you were missing 100 years ago.

Also, if you're bunking here during the convention, stay close to your bed because the hotel is offering Michelle Obama's official shortbread cookies during turndown service.
