Denver, seven others vie to host Final Four
Denver is one of eight finalists to play host to the NCAA women's basketball Final Four for the 2012 through 2016 tournaments.
Denver and the Pepsi Center are competing with Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Indianapolis; Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans; San Antonio; and Tampa, Fla., for one of the five spots.
The Division I basketball committee will visit each city in September and October, and the finalists will present bids to the committee in November. The five sites will be announced in mid-November.
Of the eight candidates, Indianapolis, New Orleans, San Antonio and Tampa have hosted previous women's Final Fours. Indianapolis will play host to the NFL's Super Bowl in 2012. Denver played host to the men's Final Four in 1990.
BURGUNDY-WHITE GAME For the second year in a row, the Avalanche will play its Burgundy- White Game at Cadet Ice Arena at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Faceoff for the Avs' annual intrasquad game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22.

SKY SOX WIN Colorado Springs scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Tucson Sidewinders 12-5 Wednesday night. Left fielder Christian Colonel had three RBI.
RAPIDS ADD DEFENDER Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids signed defender Cory Gibbs. Details of the contract were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-1 Florida native has 19 appearances for the U.S. men's team and most recently played for Charlton Athletic in England.
RAGE SIGNINGS The Central Hockey League's Rocky Mountain Rage re-signed center Simon Watson, who returns for his second season in Broomfield.
The club also signed second- year defenseman Mark Smith.
YOUTH GOLF WINNERS Elizabeth Wang, of Parker, and Coby Welch, of Highlands Ranch, won their divisions of the inaugural Colorado Junior Golf Association 10-Under Junior Series Championship at Boulder Country Club.
Wang, 8, shot 66 among the girls; Welch, 10, had a 62 among the boys.
