Obama ticket hopefuls told that volunteer gig is involved

Published August 13, 2008 at 12:05 a.m.

Text size

Some of those hoping to wrangle a seat for Barack Obama's speech were told this week they have to put in six hours of volunteer work for his campaign by Friday to have a shot at a ticket.

And that ruffled at least a few feathers.

"My whole reason why I'm so mad about it is because Democrats need to act like Democrats," said Heather Kreider, a working mother from Centennial.

"Democrats work for a living, and they have to work and take care of their families. And they say these are open to those in the community, so they shouldn't ask people to drop everything in their lives for this," Kreider said Tuesday.

Doing the volunteer work only makes someone eligible for a ticket and doesn't guarantee one, according to the phone message from the campaign.

Obama's decision to move the last night of the Democratic National Convention to Invesco Field at Mile High, where he will speak to a crowd of more than 75,000, sparked a frenzy for tickets.

Campaign organizers pledged that more than half of those in the stadium would be Coloradans, but they have been vague about how they would decide who got tickets. Kreider was among more than 80,000 people who applied for tickets to Obama's Aug. 28 speech accepting his party's presidential nomination.

As part of the application process, people were asked to check a box if they were willing to volunteer for the Obama campaign.

Matt Chandler, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, said the only people who were asked to volunteer were those who said on their applications that they were willing to do the work.

Those who don't volunteer will still have a chance at the tickets, Chandler said.

"The vast majority of people who get credentials won't have to volunteer," he said. "The folks who might have accidentally hit the 'volunteer' tab, they don't have to worry. They're in the same place in line."

People asked to volunteer are those in line for "all star" tickets that will put them closer to the stage, and they are being contacted first, said Stephanie Mueller, campaign spokeswoman. Applicants who didn't offer to volunteer will be contacted later this week, she said.

But Kreider said she is certain she didn't hit the "volunteer" box on the online application. Still, Kreider got a message telling her that she had to do six hours of volunteer work by Friday if she wanted a chance at a ticket. Kreider said she will not do the work.

"Absolutely not," she said. "Now, it's pure principle. I was a Hillary Clinton supporter, and this is literally my first touch with the Obama campaign. And it's just disappointing."

This is as simple as "supply & demand". There are thousands of people who want to be in the stadium when Sen. Obama gives his acceptance speech. Therefore, asking for a few volunteer hours does not seem out of line for a chance at these hotly requested tickets.

In the real world, everyone needs to realize that no one person can bring about the change we need in Washington. Real change comes from many people, not only believing it can happen, but working together to make it happen.

It's amazing how many critics so enjoy the hateful comments, but would never think of volunteering time or money for something that could make a difference. None of us will ever be happy with everything from either parties candidates, but we could start concentrating on the good that could come with very little effort.

FYI- I happen to have been involved with the Obama campaign as a volunteer for almost a year now. Nevertheless, when the decision was made as to how tickets would be allocated, just like every other person whether they had been a long time volunteer like myself or whether they just became involved with the campaign I'm in the same boat in terms of preference for tickets to Invesco.

So in spite of the hundereds of hours I've worked with the campaign over the past year I'm at the same starting point as everyone else and that's OK.

If you 've got the time and energy to lend a hand with the campaign and improve your chances of getting a ticket great I hope I see you there. If you don't have the time but you were among those who got signed up right away there is still a good cahnce you'll get a ticket. So basiclly it's first come first served though in terms over the oveall size of the crowd there will be a small percentage of people who had the time to volunteer who will get some preference.

To everyone else all I can say is I wish that Invesco was big enough to hold everyone that would like to attend but reality is what it is.

The important thing to remember in this historic election year is that we get the leadership we need into the Whitehouse and that of course would be Barack Obama!

That might just be the most uninformed statement I've seen on these forums. Is everyone really working "2-3 jobs"? I've only got one... who do you know that is working three full time jobs?

And is "war spending and corporate tax cuts" really the cause of our current economic slowdown? Not likely... Usually corporate tax cuts and war spending improves an economy. War spending is what brought us out of the Great Depression, and the first thing John Kennedy did was to lower taxes and guess what, it stimulated the economy.

Why are so many people against corporations? Corporations do most of the spending (which drives the economy). When corporations make more, they spend more. When they get a tax cut for certain activity, it drives more of that activity. That's good for the economy....

If they have full-time jobs, families, out-of-town guests, out-of-town commitments, or anything at all already on their schedules this week, it would be fairly difficult to squeeze in 6 hours of volunteer work before this Friday. The request to volunteer this week in a campaign office did not take into account any other volunteer work that an individual might have already committed to or performed, or anything someone might be more than willing to do if given the option of scheduling it out with more notice. The message was VERY specific - if you couldn't get yourself into a campaign office to volunteer (typical volunteer shifts are 2 or 3 hour blocks) THIS week, you likely would NOT be considered for a ticket.

This article, at least when I read it, appeared to be written somewhat in haste and spotty in its reporting of the facts. It is left a little unclear as to whether everyone attending is expected to volunteer, but the article reports that the campaign denies this, and it does seem unlikely for 75,000 people in any case. However, it does appear that the Obama campaign is acknowledging that the 'all-star' tickets closest to the stage will require 'volunteer' work. It does not say how many all-star tickets there are, and this number may indeed depend on how many people 'volunteer'. So neither the article nor the headline is blatantly biased as you claim from your anti-conservative perspective.

You cry "bias!", just because the article is not unduly complimentary of the Obama campaign, the DNC, and all things liberal, as you are accustomed. I guess you think they should have interviewed some Obama campaign staffers on how wonderful it is to be a volunteer for Obama. Liberal people just wants to make the historic moment over inexperience part!! Barack Obama is not a 100% black man! NOT the Traditional Democratic and Republican parties anymore! Simply new formation of the parties! What happened to Alan Keyes?! Oh, maybe Alan Keyes is too BLACK or too much traditional for both liberals and conservatives! No one look at him that way as the way people look at Obama these days while Alan Keyes was running for President last time! Obama is a cheap shot like Al Gore! Al Gore put fiction, not facts in his movie, and in his book,(just like Obama)and won a Nobel Prize over a 89 years old woman who saved 500 jewish children during WW2!! I am a an assistant wildlife biologist. Hell with liberals and conservatives. We need to elect more as a bispartsian leadership with experience that kick the congressmen and congress women to do the work for us, REAL ACTION!!!! NOT TALKS, or SHUT DOWN, ONLY DO ACTIONS. I am sick of this crap!

Conservativeslayer, I doubt it's just one woman that is upset! I'm from Rhode Island and reading the article upset me. This is NOT the democratic party of John F Kennedy anymore and Obama is no JFK! I can't imagine asking working people to give up 6 hours of their time to serve him, just for the chance to sit in a stadium with 75,000 other people and listen to him blather on about 'Change'!! Well, change is all you're going have in your pockets if you vote Sen. Obama into the White House!
Actually, I think "Lucky All-Stars Given Marvelous Opportunity!" would have made a wonderful headline!!

At $2400 per ticket (potential eBay price) that works out to about $400 per hour of volunteer work.

    Sign me up!

Oh wait, the DNC is considering invalidating the tickets if people choose to sell them. Guess only the DNC is allowed to profit from volunteerism.

I think this is some foolishness that either someone within Senator Obama's campaign, or someone in the media or even possibly the Republican party generated, either to inspire Democrats for Obama or to create discord in the otherwise pro-Obama Democratic status quo. Nothing more, nothing less. In any case, I believe it was a tactical maneuver by whomever is responsible. But definitely not Senator Obama. He has a better sense of fairness than this!! People, PLEASE!!

Conservativeslayer, you mention gaffes by McCain, but who was it that thought the U.S. was comprised of 57 states? Any candidate can get a little mixed up after hours of travel and different cities/states every day and little sleep in between, much less sleep on a bus or plane instead of a regular bed.

I love Obama, but this is out of control, spam and lies lately.

My wife and I have given several hundred dollars to him, now he wants a short notice 6-hour shift by friday?

Shame on you Barak, we have already done as much as we can, which is the only reason you are even coming to Denver.

We are martians. We have planted an antagonist to suction away your gray matter. That logic stuff has got to be done away with, otherwise it will be difficult to achieve that world government dominance thing we have been striving for...prerequisite to universal dominance. Just stick to the illogical emotional stuff and we will direct you brainless little pod people on how to better support us and the lazy little pod people that have no ambitions. It is not without reward of course, we will provide you labor unions and lots and lots and lots of new openings for government departments of pod people assistance programs. And while we appear to be the party of peace, just remember that once we have complete control we will do anything to stay in power, including removal of all armed munitions and then we will move onto other countries and eventually...like pinky and the brain...we'll take over the world.

Looks like you've been conned. You should have expected it. The great one just wanted to reach his goal of x million number of supporters. They just anounced that they had reached that goal. That's why I don't bother to answer to any of their idiotic, lying, manipulating ads. Just like he went to Berlin and and pretended that those thousands of people were worshiping the mesiah, the great one, he now claims to have all these supporters. Shame on you. Be great, stand tall, and stand for what you believe in. If you don't believe in Obama don't fall for his trickery. Just because we're Democrats doesn't mean we have to accept him. He is dangerous and the people need to open their eyes NOW!

Attention ComicbookSlayer, go back to playing Dungeon & Dragons,
this is a conversation for adults. If it's true that Rocky has taken Osama08 to task, well then GOOD!, I have never seen a group so thin skinned as the Osama08 crew. Have you missed the 8yr crucifixion of GWB by the liberal press ??? If Osama08 is to truely lead this country (and by God I hope he's not) then he might want to pull up his big girl panties and start acting like a MAN.
