Oprah rents digs for week of DNC

S. Gaylord house reportedly costs $50,000 for 7 days

Oprah Winfrey hasn't confirmed her attendance at the convention.

Oprah Winfrey hasn't confirmed her attendance at the convention.

Oprah Winfrey has rented a house in a historic neighborhood near Cherry Creek for the week of the Democratic National Convention, according to a source.

Rent for the house, which is on South Gaylord Street, is said to be $50,000 a week.

A spokeswoman for Winfrey said she didn't know if the talk show host had rented a place in Denver to entertain guests.

"Her attendance at the convention has not been confirmed," said the spokeswoman, who didn't want her name to be published.

Winfrey, who for years has been a close friend to U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, was among the first popular figures to endorse him.

She helped pull in enormous crowds during Obama's initial campaign events.

Obama will be formally nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate at the national convention in Denver later this month.

$50k to live in a house Gaylord???? I checked out google maps and zillow. These are small, yet overpriced, homes missing even the basics of DRIVE WAYS. Who would pay $50k for the right to park on the street? Even better who would pay the going rate of $400k for it?

I seriously hope Oprah is trying to save someone from foreclosure. And if I'm right... To the person renting their home, buy less JUNK. $400k ain't that much over 30 years.

Yeah, Obama might restore the Clinton era taxes back on the wealthy, but at least that money goes back into the ecomomy. We had a budget surplus and a thriving economy under Clinton and it is the model we should strive for in the future. Bush created the greatest deficit in history, no wonder our interest rates rose and the housing market collapsed.

Gaylord doesn't exist south of 1st Avenue to Alameda, and there is no Ellsworth Ave between Downing and University, because the Denver Country Club land is there. But a "private street" that is S Gaylord exists for about a half block north of Alameda behind the walls, where some homes are on the south side of the country club.

The profits being made by these companies is going directly back to drilling and R&D. These profits have enabled the oil and gas companies to expand their range of drilling both economically and environmentally. When Katrina rocked New Orleans, not a drop of oil was spilled in the Gulf. What does that tell you? That drilling and production are the safest they have every been, and because of one wreck, which was a captains fault, not Exxon's has everyone scared out of their pants that it will happen again. Big_D writes : "A windfall tax doesn't affect the price of oil, it is a commodity stupid."

How naive is this? Big_D evidently does not understand economics. Oil companies, just like any other company, are in business to make a profit for the stockholder/owner. If any company is taxed, those taxes, windfall or not, are passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. To use your words without the name calling, it's economics.

Yes, oil is a commodity. What does that have to do with your argument that it does not affect the price of oil. By definition in Merriam Webster a commodity is "

1: an economic good: as a: a product of agriculture or mining b: an article of commerce especially when delivered for shipment <commodities futures> c: a mass-produced unspecialized product <commodity chemicals> <commodity memory chips>

2 a: something useful or valued <that valuable commodity patience>; also : thing, entity b: convenience, advantage

    3obsolete : quantity, lot

4: a good or service whose wide availability typically leads to smaller profit margins and diminishes the importance of factors (as brand name) other than price

5: one that is subject to ready exchange or exploitation within a market <stars as individuals and as commodities of the film industry — Film Quarterly>"

Except for the 3rd obsolete definition, all these definition deal with something of value that one person or company owns.

If I own a gravel pit and gravel is a commodity, then I have something of value that I can sell. If I am in business to make a profit, then I am going to up the price of gravel to cover any taxes and still leave me the amount of profit that I desire. If the government comes in and says that I am making too much profit and raise my taxes, then I am going to up my price to cover those taxes. If I am not allowed to have a profit margin comparable to other industries, then I am being singled out and discriminated against.

It is the same for the oil and gas industry. The oil and gas industry does not have any higher profit margin than other industries, yet they are being singled out as an industry that hates the American consumer because they make money.

What about the interest that people pay to credit card companies? Interest can be raised to 20% or more because someone is late with a payment or goes over their credit line. Not only the interest on that account, but other accounts that a person has never been late on can raise interest rates.

The fact of the matter is the oil and gas industry have no higher profit margins than many other industries.

    Profit margins of several industries:

Closed-End Funds such as the S&P 500, Blue Chip fund, and others have the highest profit margin with an average of 50.1%

    Application Software - 23.3%

Internet Information Providers such as Google - 20.8%

    Pharmaceuticals - 16.4%

    Steel and Iron - 15.8%

    Railroads - 13.5%

    Banks - between 8.2% & 15.5% depending on region

Electric - 10.1% (with one wind company at 33.5%)

Oil companies - between 8.8% (big oil companies) & 11.9% (independent companies).

Here is a link to check this out: http://biz.yahoo.com/p/121qpmd.html

Just why should oil companies be penalized and these other industries should not? Don't say that people have to drive, because people also have to use electricity. People use steel and iron when they buy products made out of them or made with tools or machines made out of them. I don't know too many people who don't bank and at some point have credit cards, mortgages or something where they pay interest. Any one on here uses computer products, software, Google, etc. If you buy lumber or many other products, it was probably at some point on the railroad.

The point I'm making is that if you start saying that one industry is making too much money and must pay more taxes, then it will have to be applied to other industries that make just as much of a percentage and in many instances just as much $$ profit.

Doing this will result in more businesses leaving the United States and taking jobs overseas where they don't have to pay as much tax.

Come on to Denver, Oprah, Obama, Hillary, et al, leave some of your wealth in Colorado and then take your liberal economic views back home.

There is a brand new $1.4M house that is on the market a few blocks north of Old South Gaylord shops. They have been bringing in lots of furnishings over the last few days and its my guess that this is the house. I looked it up on Zillow and there are no houses with a South Gaylord address north of Alameda, so it must be between Alameda and Louisiana (not much south of Louisiana).

I'd just like to point out that Zillow says the average home cost in this area is only $418K, and that includes several homes values at or near $1M.

Hmmm.... wonder what the surrouding area is like? Hmmm... wonder if the bubble will pop?

Oh and I can bike to work within minutes, get anything I want delivered, and pay half as much for just as nice a place in my suburban Aurora "tract" house. -- The dollar you bank today is the fiver you pull out tomorrow.

Gaylord area = OVER RATED!! !!! OVER RATED!! !!! OVER RATED!! !!!

Good god! I'm sure glad I posted that initial comment. Damn this was funny.

Grow up people. Stop w/ the pointless name calling. You sound like a bunch of five year olds that just had their favorite toy take away. (and yes I do realize the irony of this statement)

Froward... Shut up! Don't you have something better to do? You sound like a wannabe baller. Maybe you should hit the court. Who knows you might even make the Nuggets' roster?

God knows they need to start from scratch, and Karl admitted it when he traded Camby away.

Froward... Most of our founding fathers died pennyless because they created a confederacy. The weak central government allowed the States to create their own form of currency. Thus, none were valuable. America is experimenting w/ at least its fourth form of government.

    - confederacy (1776-1788)
    - representative federalist republic (1788-1933; me like)
    - federal crutch (1933-present)
    - global confederacy (trending)

I'm sure they got along fine. Just no where near today's standards.
