Last summer, Jay Cutler endured a two-week period during which the constant strain on his right arm had to be counterbalanced by post-practice icepacks.

But he appears to be throwing the ball with significant zip with no ill effects this training camp.

"I don't think I ever had a dead arm in camp. My arm's kind of rubber. I can throw the ball for a long time, a lot of balls, maybe a little bit of ice here or there," Cutler countered. "I feel good right now. When I started camp, I was taking a lot of reps. We kind of scaled back with throwing, so I feel fine."

Cutler has returned to his normal 233-pound playing weight and regained strength after aggressively treating his Type 1 diabetes.

The fatigue that marked last season, pre-diagnosis, he said, is gone.

"I feel like I did a couple years back," Cutler said, adding, "It just feels good to go out there every day and be consistent."

The third-year quarterback has done little so far to dispel the notion he might be in for a substantial leap in his play, given his current health and additional experience as a starter.

"I'm making mistakes still, but that's part of it," he said. "I've got a good feel for the offense. We're doing a lot of stuff right now. We're kind of feeling some stuff out trying to see what direction we want to go. And we've gotten a lot of plays in. It's been really good."

Etc.

* Cornerback Dre' Bly left the morning practice because of an apparent injury to his upper left arm and didn't return, but the injury isn't considered serious. The Broncos already were missing Champ Bailey (hamstring) and safety Hamza Abdullah (groin). Because of John Lynch's departure, it means none of the first-team starters to open camp was on the field at the end of Wednesday's workouts.

* Hall made one of the top plays of camp when he juked cornerback Karl Paymah to the ground in the open field on his way to a 50-yard reception. Paymah was victimized again on the next play when Eddie Royal made a sideline catch and dived for the left pylon for a 15-yard TD.

* With defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson getting his normal day of rest, he was replaced in the starting lineup by Kenny Peterson.

* Center Tom Nalen (left knee) missed his ninth straight day of practice. Backup left tackle Erik Pears left practice because of a sore shoulder as a precautionary measure, the team said.

* Cutler will replace Lynch as host of CBS 4's weekly Broncos wrapup show, which is broadcast n Monday nights from Old Chicago in Littleton. The show debuts Tuesday Sept. 9, because of Denver's opener the previous night.

Thursday

Denver will have a pair of workouts today, at 8:30 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. (The latter is only special teams). But the Broncos' 8:30 a.m. practice on Friday will be closed to the public, as the team will hold only a brief walk-through before flying to Houston for the preseason opener.

Yeah, he's a real piece of work. He even made cruel remarks about Torains injury. People like him have negative Karma and it will come back to haunt him. Positive things do not happen to negative people. He'll find out, sooner or later. Probably, sooner. Jay made a very tough adjustment when he found out about his diabetes. He didn't let it get in the way of his dreams. You have to admire this young kids, courage. Like a pit bull, heart and gameness.
