It was expected to be one of the top battles of camp.
But so far, Domonique Foxworth is turning the competition with Karl Paymah for the starting nickel cornerback spot into a runaway.
Foxworth's status was only underscored Tuesday, when, with Champ Bailey resting a sore right hamstring, he took Bailey's spot with the starting defense.
"We look at him as a starter, and I expect him to play as such," assistant general manager Jeff Goodman said. "And he's so far played well in camp."
Foxworth was bumped from the first team at corner last offseason because of the addition of Dre Bly, then was forced to play safety last season because of injuries.
It likely has helped that he has been able to focus on his primary position. But he also has been aggressive playing the ball, a knock previously levied against him.
Bailey chalks up Foxworth's development to maturity.
"That's just awareness and experience," Bailey said. "His awareness has gotten so much better over the last couple years. And that's just from playing. Once you start playing a lot and seeing everything, you're going to start picking off balls you should have picked off years ago."
The Iceman cometh
Kicker Matt Prater went 13-for-14 on field-goal attempts in his latest on-field session Tuesday, with the kicks ranging from 34 to 58 yards.
Afterward, he was applying ice to his right groin, the same area he strained during minicamps. But Prater said it was only a precaution.
"I'm fine," he said. "Just because I had it before, I want to keep it healthy."
Prater's miss came from 54 yards, wide left. He's 45-for-49 this summer.
Injury report
Don't expect Tom Nalen (inflamed left knee) to participate in practices any time soon. Coach Mike Shanahan was talking about weeks instead of days, though Nalen continues to work in the weight room on conditioning.
Nalen has missed a week of workouts, but the goal is to get the 15-year veteran right for the regular season and not worry about the preseason.
"Right now, the MRI's negative and we're not going to do surgery just to do surgery," Shanahan said. "Hopefully, rest will be enough. We'll find out in the next couple weeks. But it must be very painful for Tom not to be out there."
Fullback Peyton Hillis (left hamstring), Bailey and safety Hamza Abdullah (groin) also sat.
On-field highlights
* Tight end Tony Scheffler twice got behind the defense for long catches of Jay Cutler passes.
* Linebacker Jamie Winborn continued his strong camp, deflecting a Cutler pass that was intercepted by cornerback Lamont Reid.
* Rookie receiver Eddie Royal made one of the best catches of camp to date, laying out for a two-handed, over-the-shoulder catch on a sideline fade route with cornerback Jack Williams draped on his back.
Wednesday
The Broncos will practice at 8:30 a.m. and 3:50 p.m. The afternoon session will be a "jog-through."
The team announced there will be only a morning practice Friday and it will be closed to the public. After the hourlong workout, the Broncos will travel to Houston.

I know we got Casey backing up, and I really do recall how dominate that KC line was with him manning the center spot, but would prefer nalen. Get that knee well Greek as that is a HOF we need your working on.

Champ Bailey is superhuman so I'm not too worried about that hammy. Although having had a hamsting injury myself, I know how nagging it can be. As soon as you think its good it flares up again. But that's why I'm me and he's the Champ. Get that hammy well and get back out there soon Champ, we need you!!!

Tom Nalen and Champ Bailey do not need to practice.
Stop it. Let them ride a bike or smoke a butt. Keep them out.

There were many backs that ran behind an average line and put up good numbers. Tony Dorsett didn't always have the greatest line but because of his outstanding natural ability he always was a threat. True, he had a good offensive line during a large portion of his career, but not always. For all those people who were whining about how we did nothing in the draft or FA, I bet you're glad we have Casey, right now, aren't you? Champ will heal. Nalen, I will wait for the verdict. Dano, I agree. Let them play if ready, on the last preseason game.

I am worried about Nalen, I think we may lose him too, like Smith and Lynch, I think Casey can do the job, I remember the KC lines were always pretty good up until last year, but they also lost Shields and their LT who were both pro-bowlers, so that will hurt you. As long as Holland can get in shape, we should be fine talent wise, but if Nalen is gone, I worry more about the leadership and getting the calls right on protection, hopefully Casey is up for the task.

bigbadthor, even though Casey played on the KC offense, he is familiar, somewhat with Denver's offense before he even came hear. He has been hitting the books and since Nalen went down, he has been the 1st team center. He will do well. He is a veteran who knows the NFL. He could jump right in there and show some leadership. I just wish Goodall would get off his butt and make his decision on Marshall, already. That way, Shanahan can make a better decision as to who will take his place while he's out. I would like to know who the jerk was who spouted off on NBC that Marshall got the 3 day suspension (the one that was not known issued, as of yet)? That idiot better get his "sources" all on the same page, because it was lame. It was probable a Raiders fan, trying to stir up the pot (just kidding).

I'm worried about Nalen myself, but Casey is seasoned veteran and played on some great KC lines in the past so I have a lot of confidence in him that he can get the job done if called upon.

Figures, right after I wrote about the "leak", they finally announced it. I think it will go 2 games. Why else would Goodall dangle the carrot in front of his face unless he planned to honor his 2 game with counseling, or 3 games without it? I would have liked to see BM in the divisional games. But I think we're going to get a good look at Royal. I am pumped. Heck, I'll be at my Bronco bar for the opening preseason game this Saturday. I want to get a good look at these rookies.

Dear Fellow Bronco Fans:
The NFL today announced its league-wide fan code of conduct. It focuses on fan expectations and tries to encourage a stadium environment that is enjoyable for everyone. The Broncos have had a fan code of conduct in place since 1999, but the league has mandated that this information be reiterated.
"The in-stadium experience is critically important to the NFL, our clubs and our fans, and it will be a major focus this season," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We are committed to improving the fan experience in every way we can -- from the time fans arrive in the parking lot to when they depart the stadium. We want everyone to be able to come to our stadiums and enjoy the entire day."
Some of the prohibited actions are behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal in nature, verbal or physical harassment of opposing team fans, fighting, smoking (except in designated areas) and foul or abusive language or obscene gestures.
Any fan in violation of these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games. But no worries, Broncos fans knew all about these sorts of rules 9 years ago.
This could mean the entire Rader Black Hole could be suspended by Goodell for the year--HA or at very least stop Beer sales after the teams are introduced!!!!!!!!!!!

I know Champ dosen't "need" to practice, but the better his hammy is healed the better, that's all. Adam Scheffter was the one who came out with the inital report on Marshall and his 3 games and even though it was a premature report, he was right.

Kevin27, Adam Scheffler is an idiot. I feel that the 1st people who should get wind of this is the coach and the player. So whoever leaked the info to Adam, should be fired from his job. Even though Scheffler has been accurate about a lot of things, he also has been known to spout off some stupid things.
FTR, you forgot an important item for the Raider fans. All the pot they smoke before a game, during the game and after. That would explain the mentality of many of them who stab people and start fights with people at a game (San Diego) over nothing. Delinquents. As far as the "foul language", I think everytime we have to utter the word "Oakland", it is using a bad word. Just my opinion.
