He said it

"Not to take anything away from (Florida left-hander Scott Olsen), but the glare on the hitting backdrop here in a day game makes it tough to pick up the ball. He pitched well. He kept the ball down and away and it was tough to see."

Matt Holliday, Rockies left fielder, on Olsen allowing one hit in six innings before the Marlins went to the bullpen.

Numbers game

14 losses without a win for Washington right-handed pitcher Tim Redding in his career against teams from the National League West. He has a 5.26 ERA in 25 career appearances against NL West teams, 21 of which were starts. He is 0-5 each against Arizona and San Francisco, 0-3 against the Dodgers and 0-1 against the Rockies. He has no career decisions against San Diego.

Left-hander Valerio De Los Santos was told Sunday he is being taken off the major league roster after two starts in which he worked eight innings, gave up five runs and walked 11 batters. Manager Clint Hurdle said a relief pitcher will be called up for at least two days, until left-hander Jeff Francis is activated from the disabled list to start Wednesday. That could open the door for the Rockies to get a look at right-hander Steven Register, who is 5-2 with a team-high 16 saves and a 3.28 ERA in 48 games at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Register was a Rule 5 draft pick by the Mets during the winter, but the Rockies reclaimed him when he was the final cut of the Mets during spring training. Right- hander Ryan Speier, who has been with the Rockies three times this year, was sent down July 28, so he isn't eligible to be called up before Thursday. Any player who is sent down must stay with the minor league team for 10 days before he can be brought back, except if there is an injury.

ETC.

Left-handed Brian Fuentes earned his 20th save in 22 opportunities since returning to the closer role, becoming the first pitcher in franchise history to have four seasons of at least 20 saves. . . . The Rockies won the season series 5-3, the first time they have won a series against Florida in five years. . . . Taveras extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an infield hit in the sixth, the only hit off starter Scott Olsen. . . . The Rockies are 12-20 in day games, second worst in the National League next to the Giants, but they have won their past four day games. . . . The Rockies are 18-13 in games left- handers have started against them, winning five of the past six. . . . Rusch allowed two runs in 51/3 innings. He has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his past five starts. After giving up five runs in 42/3 innings of his Rockies debut, he is 3-0 with a 3.67 ERA in five starts. . . . Garrett Atkins was 3-for-28 in the final seven games of the trip after going 6-for-13 at Cincinnati. . . . Second baseman Jeff Baker is 0-for-16 in his past four starts.
