Regional scene: Clippers withdraw offer to Fazekas

Ralston Valley High School graduate Nick Fazekas and the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to the withdrawal of the team's qualifying offer from June 25, making the forward an unrestricted free agent.

Signed by the Clippers as a free agent March 18, Fazekas appeared in 26 games last season, averaging 4.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists.

SKY SOX FALL SHORT Jason Dubois belted two home runs to spark the Iowa Cubs to a 4-3 win Friday against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in a Pacific Coast League game in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Sky Sox nearly caught up to the Cubs in the ninth inning when Humberto Cota smacked a double to right.

Matt Miller scored for Colorado Springs to make it 4-3, but Kenny Perez was called out at home for the second out of the inning.

REINHARD ROLLS Colorado Springs resident Rachel Reinhard finished in fourth place Friday night in the skateboard street women's final at the X Games in Los Angeles, collecting a 78.00 score behind winner Elissa Steamer (87.83, San Francisco).

COURSE RECORD Colorado Springs runner Phil Sakala won the Pearl Street Mile in Boulder on Thursday night, finishing in 4 minutes, 10.1 seconds to set a course record.

Boulder veteran Colleen De Reuck won the women's mile in 5:05.3. "It's great running the men and women together," De Reuck told the (Boulder) Daily Camera. "The only thing is you can't see where the other women are."

SKYHAWKS REACH SUMMIT Fort Lewis has won the USA Cycling Collegiate Division I team rankings race for the 2007-08 season, dethroning North Carolina-based Lees-

McRae College.

Fort Lewis inched ahead for the title thanks to its third- place finish at the USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships, where Lees-McRae took fifth.

Colorado State finished third in the Division I points race, and the University of Colorado finished fourth.

The Colorado School of Mines finished third in the Division II rankings, Mesa State finished sixth, Colorado College was seventh and the Air Force Academy placed 10th.

SPERRY WATCH CSU tight end Kory Sperry, a Vineland resident and Pueblo County High School graduate, has been placed on the watch list for the 2008 John Mackey Award, presented annually to the best interior tight end in college football.

Sperry, a redshirt senior, played in just two games last season before a knee injury ended his campaign.

BOUND FOR PUEBLO Green River, Wyo., women's basketball forward Shandryn Trumble has decided to transfer to Colorado State-Pueblo from Texas State-San Marcos.
