LINCICOME: Summer beckons for Avalanche

Published April 30, 2008 at 12:10 a.m.

Text size

The light pole banners outside the Pepsi Center urge the Avs, "Play On!" What was meant as a command is now a wish.

Backs against the wall, or backs against the boards as it were, is not the ideal place to play hockey. But it does bring clarity to the mission.

"We know the hole we're in," said Avs center Paul Stastny, adding depth to the problem.

This is not a hole as much as it is a crater, sheer-sided and slippery. This is how it is: Only two teams in Stanley Cup history have ever come back from 0-3, and the last time the Avs had a chance to do so, they surrendered Game 4 with one foot out the door.

"A tough loss, obviously," said Joe Sakic. "They deserve to be up 3-0. They've outskated us and outworked us. We played better but it is not enough. We still lost the game."

The Avs did as they claimed they needed to, score first to get some momentum, to churn up some home enthusiasm.

But no sooner had Cody McLeod redirected a shot past Chris Osgood for the Avs than the Red Wings tied and took the lead on goals by Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen, neither of whom should have had so much space to shoot.

The Avs never led again, though two power-play goals by Andrew Brunette and a furious third period kept the issue in doubt, what may be the last, best moments of an otherwise unremarkable playoff against the old enemy from Detroit.

The Red Wings seemed to gather around the Avs' net as if Jose Theodore was giving away free samples, which he was in a way. But this time, after four goals allowed, he was permitted to remain in the game.

It does no good now to replace Theodore with Peter Budaj because it would be like closing the body after the autopsy.

Before Tuesday night's game, the chore was daunting, to win four of five from the best team in hockey. Now it is four in a row. And now it is nearly impossible, a mind-set that had settled onto the Avs even before the game.

"Oh, we think we're able to beat 'em," said defenseman Kurt Sauer after the morning skate. "We only have two more chances."

Sauer was talking about winning one game, not a series. And one win may be the only solace for the Avs, to know they have played the Wings half as well as the Nashville Predators did.

For the Avs to blame injuries or health as they might is of no use because the games are played with those who can play them. And if the flu that caught Theodore early, or if at all, and the recurring ailments of Peter Forsberg, seem so much bad luck, what is also true is that even at full strength, the Avs would need extraordinary good fortune to beat a team that is, man for man, vastly superior.

"It's still a rivalry," insisted Detroit winger Darren McCarty. "It's still a competition. We've got a lot of respect for those guys. They've got a lot of talent."

Nice of him to say, but compared to the Red Wings, the Avs' top talent is a bit beyond the sell date, and Detroit's is just coming ripe. Henrik Zetterberg, 27, is a star ready to shine for a long time, as is center Datsyuk, 29. Franzen, 30, has become the star of the series.

And, however slight the consolation, it took the best of the Red Wings to whip the Avs, all the goals by those three.

The Avs are supposed to be a young team, or were headed that way before getting Forsberg back and Adam Foote and Ruslan Salei.

In fact, even including 46-year-old Chris Chelios, of those players who have been on the ice in the playoffs so far, the average age of Detroit is 29.8 compared with 29.1 for the Avs. Take Chelios out and they are exactly the same.

What was needed was the astonishing Theodore of the first round against the Wild, and the extra consideration that Forsberg would naturally cause.

And the fallacy of Forsberg in the first place is this: The Avs were trying to get better by adding one Swede and the Red Wings already had eight.

The added losses of Wojtek Wolski and Scott Hannan and, for Game 3, Ryan Smyth, and then - after the first period - also Stastny, it was as if the vital Avs were outpatients and the Wings were as forceful as the team that had half the starters in the West All-Star Game (compared to one Av sub, Stastny) should be.

"We don't want to worry about health," said Avs coach Joel Quenneville.

Oh, there is much more to worry about now. Like whether to pack for the summer on the way to Game 4 or after.

Is it just me or does anyone else have a problem with the whole Theodore being sick and still playing for the first two games? This year Quenville has done some strange things, but this one takes the cake. If he knew Theodore was sick, why did he start him!! If Theodore lied and said he was good to go, well guess what???? I think you should go, AWAY!!!! Any athlete who plays at less than 100% in a playoff game against the best team in hockey this year, but does not man it up and sit out, needs to be fired. If Quenville did know then he should go too. If a real world employee/manager combo did the same thing, they would be in the unemployment line the next day. And yet Quenville and Theodore did it TWICE!!!! This little episode cost us badly. I dont blame these losses on the loss of Stastny, Smyth, Wolski and Svatos. I do not think the Avs would have been down 0-2 coming home had they started Budaj. Giguere made some great moves and now he needs to do 2 more, LOL. I think your columns a always good reads, thanks for keeping me informed.

Tho I'm a Red Wing Fan and I understand how you feel bookworm. It's the whole hockey playoff mentality about playing hurt or injured. This isn't baseball where a hangnail is enough to make a player quit. A lot of the players play when there not 100% in the playoffs, there's a lot of pressure to do so.Hell alot of the players play with broken bones. If Theodore DID NOT play and they lost then every one would have questioned his heart. And most people who come down with the flu or cold knows that you think your doing good then all of a sudden bam it hits you! And no offense to Budaj but he came in when they were behind and he wasn't expected to win the game for them as Theodore was. He DID play awesome against the Wild but he shouldn't have to carry the whole team every round, just steal the occasional game. The injuries suck (we lost Kronwell and Schnieder last year) but it's up to the team not just the goalie. At least the game was close but it's time for the team to step up. The Wings WERE the President Cup's winner so let's not be too surprised if they have a few wins. Sorry but GO WINGS111

The Wings have been pilloried for every playoff-loss since around 1993, and the national media never mentions the "lucky bounces," or the "staggering injury toll," the way they've been excusing the Avs this series. Why is that?

Credit to the Avs for playing a furious third period last night, and coming very close to tying it up. This series has not been the romp some Wingnuts have been proclaiming it, aside from game 2. Still, it's 3-0, and all over but the splatting...you know what I'm talking about, there.

First, Q has to take his stuffs and go out from Colorado. Granato must join him.
First, the Avs need a winner coach.
Then, the organization need to hire a superstar as a center or defense.

Why aren't you supporting your team???

I would still be Loving my Wings if the tables were reversed... In fact, I have been Loving them Win or Lose since around 1981... Thats called a True Fan...

The reality being that the Red Wings are simply a much better team than the Avs. The 1st round win over the Wild doesn't look so impressive now does it?

He said there is a Red Wings bar in downtown Denver (I can't remember the name, but it was sometimes on the local news), but here sure as hell is no Avs bar in downtown Detroit. Amen to that, my brothers. Just kicking the snot out of the Avs makes the post season worthwhile. It's hilarious that 90% of the comments in their own paper are from the real hockey fans of Detroit. They need to start pushing past the neutral zone, the red wings are great at controlling it but if you want to win you have to find ways to do it. Toughen up avs, at least get us one win this series.

Also, to go as far as calling us fans bandwagoneers is just stupid. I've lived in colorado all my life and back my teams to the end, and will never cheer for another team unless it helps my team in some way. The majority of us wear our avs/broncos hats year round.

You guys act like this is the "Nordalanche" team from the late nineties or 2000 when your "team that Lindross built" had the talent to hang. The rivalry is over, deal with it. The Chickenhead is gone, his last game in 2002 was a fitting tribute to the reason that he ended up here in 96. Once again, the Wings lit him up.

This year is the final nail in the rivalry coffin, enjoy watching the team that you used to hate move on the playoffs over these next few years, I sure will.

BTW, we don't like the city much either, that's why we don't live there, our parents pretty much moved us out as kids and the only reason to go down is for sports. All cites have their issues, including Denver. As bad as Detroit is, no NFL player has been gunned down leaving a club lately.

    Mr bright side,
Classless hockey town? So what they cheered red wings suck, did it hurt your feelings that bad? You're watching hockey, what'd you expect? Man up boy!

We're acting like it's the avalanche team from 2000? No, we're all very sure it's a different team, also a different year. If it were the same team the wings would be down right now, so no one here is living in the past.

Glad you don't like our city, you're one of the ones that stereotypes everyone into one group of hate mongers so you can feel better about yourself after saying "My towns better than yours" in so many words. How childish does that sound? If you don't like a place because of a few bad apples, than you're not going to be happy anywhere. Everywhere has their "thugs" and what not. Also, no NFL player has ever been gunned down while leaving a club in detroit? So the other "regular" citizens don't matter when you're talking about something that's totally out of context of sports?

The retirement home is beckoning for you Benny, Bernie, whatever...must've been those Vietcong flashbacks that made you pick the Avs in 6.
