SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO — The Rockies today sent struggling left-hander Franklin Morales to Triple-A Colorado Springs and announced that left-hander Mark Redman would miss his next turn in the rotation because of the team's off-day Thursday.
Morales walked five and allowed six hits while retiring 13 batters in 4 1/3 innings of a 4-0 loss to the Giants on Monday.
Redman spot in the rotation was expendable because of Thursday's off day, which will enable Jeff Francis and Aaron Cook to remain on their regular schedules. Francis will pitch Friday at Coors Field when the Rockies open a series with the Dodgers and Cook on Sunday in the finale.
However, the Rockies must decide on a starter for Saturday's game against Los Angeles.
Right-hander Kip Wells, who battled in spring for the fifth spot in the rotation, has been ruled out because of a numbness he developed in his right hand on Monday night when he walked both batters he faced. Wells returned to Denver on Tuesday to be examined by a hand specialist.
They could bring up Josh Towers from Colorado Springs or complete a trade with Kansas City in which they would obtain left-hander Jorge de la Rosa. Currently at Triple-A Omaha, de la Rosa would be the player to be determined in the late-spring deal win which Colorado sent Ramon Ramirez to the Royals.

This is what happens when you stand pat over the winter. As good as the Rockies were, and can be, they needed starting pitching. They will always need starting pitching. It's time for Dealin Dan to decide what he is going to do long term with Atkins. I say keep him and deal Ian Stewart and others for a quality starter. Dan, you are being paid to make tough decisions. Those decisions must be made now!!! As much as you want to keep some of the young talent around, you don't have that luxury. GET SOME QUALITY STARTING PITCHERS NOW!!!
