Broncos let seven players go
By Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News (Contact)

The Broncos released seven players Monday, including veteran fullback Paul Smith, to clear the way to sign their rookie free- agent crop.
Smith, who got a $300,000 bonus when he signed with the team in March 2007, played in 14 games last season, largely on special teams. He didn't carry the ball and finished the season, after largely being double- teamed, with three special- teams tackles.
The Broncos also waived former University of Colorado center Mark Fenton, defensive tackle Michael Bozeman, veteran safety Steve Cargile, running back Steven Jackson, linebacker William Kershaw and running back Marquis Weeks.
The Broncos signed Cherry Creek High School graduate and former CU tackle Tyler Polumbus, Oklahoma kicker Garrett Hartley, Toledo punter Brett Kern, Houston running back Anthony Alridge, Texas-El Paso receiver Lorne Sam, South Dakota State guard Mitch Erickson and Kentucky linebacker Wesley Woodyard as undrafted rookie free agents.

You are the same type of fan that wanted Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning to lose their jobs too huh?

There is one Bill Cowher out there as well. The "who would you replace him with" argument is just lame!

So you're saying we can bring in lane kiffen's entire staff and front office? Think about that for a second. As for Bill Cowher, you do know he's retired right? We'd have to bait him out of it, if he even wants to come out, and i doubt he will. As for a young coach, yea let's get to where the falcons got with their "young" coach. So as far as i can see, including your examples, we can't get any better than shannahan.

Hey T1anda, would it change your opinion of Shanny if he'd only one two? Oh wait he did. Let's just say he had some help as well. Again, why does everyone look at what he did. The teams that we are seeing since those Superbowl teams are a direct reflection of him. He has proved nothing! Elway, Sharpe, Rod Smith, Mcafferey, Atwater, Alfred Williams, Zimmerman, Nalen, Jason Elam to name a few, all came from the previous regime. You could argue that some of the other talent that came in was not a direct reflection of him and his decisions since he was not always the GM. What has he done since the departure of Elway and his early success? What has he done? Wake up people.

Yes kiffen may be better than shanny in time, but probably wont. The NFL's a huge step for any college coach, especially when he has no experience in the pros. Most all coaches were in the league for years under people, learning. Not thrown in the fray right away and expected to learn on the fly. Which, I'm going to say, isn't really fair to the coach.

Don't let blind loyalty to Shanahan get in the way of the facts.
Fact: The Broncos have not been to the Super Bowl in 9 seasons. This is the longest period of time the Broncos have failed to appear in the Super Bowl since SB 1 - 11 (and it would take a miracle to get there next year as well).
Fact: The Broncos have won the AFC West 1 time in the last 9 seasons. This is the worst nine year period since the AFC West was created in 1970.
Shanahan's record in building a team is more miss than hit. His Super Bowl roster was filled with holdover players from the previous regime. Shanahan is in danger of becoming Don Shula. He's too good of a coach to lose too many games, but he is not good enough to build a team from scratch. He needs to go before the Broncos wake up someday and realize it's been 15-20 years since we last went to the Super Bowl.
Who's better? I don't know, but there are plenty of coaches out there who could have gone 9-7 with this bunch. Why not try out a young up-and-coming assistant (much like Shanahan was in the early 1990s)?
Josh McDaniels (NE) and Jason Garrett (Dal) are two top assistants that spring to mind.

If I had a billion burning a hole in my pocket, I'd buy the Broncos away from Pat Bowlen and send him packing, too. Then I'd hire a pair of big ugly bouncers, call Shannahan into my office, and order up a bum's rush in his honor. Bye bye, Shanny. Cart him off in the rubbish heap with that Invesco junk.
Then Jay Cutler might have a chance to really show us his talent as a quarterback. Putting him on the team was no mistake. He's good and could be great. Then the Broncos would have a new beginning. I would never combine coaching with hiring. Talent scouts and a hiring manager need to do the job of finding athletes for the team. A good coach knows how to work with who you give him. It's stupid to combine those jobs unless you cannot afford to have both. And the Broncos can easily afford to have both.

Let's check the record books, shall we?
Mike Tomlin: 0 Super Bowl wins, 10-6-0 (Regular Season), 0-1 (Post season), 1 year in league.
Jack Del Rio: 0 Super Bowl wins, 45-35 (Regular season), 1-2 (Post season) 5 years in league.
Jon Gruden: 1 Super Bowl win (gift from Tony Dungy), 86-74 (Regular season), 5-4 (Post season), 10 seasons in league
Shana-blame: 2 Super Bowl wins, 138-90 (regular season), 8-5 (post season), 15 seasons in league.
I guess Shana-blame stacks up pretty well against those young coaches. But I have a suggestion... instead of complaining about a proven coach and asking for his head, how about becoming part of the solution? I've been to too many Bronco games where 20% of the crowd is for the opposing team. How about helping to bring back the 'Rocky Mountain Thunder' and stop selling tickets to the other fans, sitting on your hands because you don't want to spill your decaf latte, and START MAKING SOME NOISE IN THAT STADIUM? It's called SUPPORTING your home team, and that's what real fans do.
..or maybe posting on a forum is all the effort you're capable of.

as far as selling tickets to outside fans maybe you should look to the organization itself. they are the ones that have made it unaffordable to take a family to the games. they are the ones that screwed long time ticket holders out of prime seats in order to sell the same seats to big corporations in order to get more money for them. the old mile high was a load stadium that most teams dreaded coming to. now its filled with a bunch of suites trying to impress clients.
Broncomaniac19 who brought in those players? who drafted them? who put them into a defensive system that clearly did not fit the talents of the players? shanahan.
Shaupeen you have some valid points. i once say a little old lady in a wheel chair, smoking a cigarette cussing and chewing out a couple of young chiefs fans at the old mile high, roughly 1996. that is a great picture to paint for all broncos fans that attend the games. the funny part about that is that these people from outside teams are supporting your broncos. they are buying the tickets, they are buying the drinks, nachos and hotdogs. the money for those things goes to the bronocos. pathetic an old woman that should know better is belittling children in her own house.

As for Shanahan, he had the Broncos in the AFC championship game three seasons ago and ran into a hot Pittsburgh team that helped him to realize Plummer was just not going to get it done. He would never use the term rebuilding, but that is what he has been doing the two years since. I do agree however that no one gets a free pass and if the team is no successful in the next two to three years then the organization should go in a different direction(like Shanny's son).

Oh Broncosfan75, where to begin in responding to you? First, thanks for the laughs. I enjoyed them this morning. Now, on to your silly claims. First, this is not a "purely bronco blog." This is a newspaper blog. It covers many things--local stories, state-wide issues, and even national and international stories. Maybe you should read more than the football beat. You might learn that there is a whole world out there beyond Invesco Field. Secondly, what you consider a waste of time, others might deem important. For example, I would consider posting on an actual, dedicated bronco blog a waste of my time, but then again, I don't put so much weight on a football team that I base my identity on them (nice name though). But I understand others might do just that. That's fine. They certainly can choose to spend their time that way. Just like I can make a comment about Cutler if I want to. That's my choice. If you don't like it, tough. Next, I am a Colorado sports fan. Just not a bronco fan. That is possible, believe it or not. Your statement that Colorado sports fans are predominantly bronco fans is unsubstantiated and, well, just wrong. I know a lot of people who root for the Rockies, Avs, Nuggets, Crush, etc that choose not to support the broncos and their greedy owner. Luckily, swallowing that bitter pill is not required to be a resident in this great state. Also, why do you assume that I'm a transplant? Just because I don't root for the broncos? Are you so intellectually thin as to assume that every bronco fan is a native? Or that only natives could love that franchise? I hate to break it to you, but that's not the way it is. On to my next point--why are you glad that I had money extorted by Pat Bowlen? Do you cheer when people are robbed? Or are you just bitter and typing in spite? Either way, you are revealing yourself to be a small, petty person. And finally, I don't need help packing--I'm not going anywhere. I've been here longer than you, and you obviously need some supervision, so i think I'll stick around. That, too, isn't up to you.
I'll let you go, as I'm sure you have things to do that are very important to you--like putting another bronco sticker on your truck, or painting your cat orange and blue, or coming up with another creative excuse that you can use when your broncos, and by extension, your identity, fail to live up to your moderately high expectations.

Bronco fans have reasons to be somewhat turned off by their team and recent success but the way i see it shaupeen, the broncos are an nfl team that fans are crazy about because they have been successful so long and they care about success. the whole stadium issue can be discussed and argued about and though i have lived in denver all my life and HATE the name of the stadium i think mile high was in need of updating and many fans agreed. if i knew it was going to be invesco field and give the broncos so much negative attention i would rather be back in the mile high days. the fact denver had the salary cap issue during the super bowl era makes them look bad but the money was used on the stadium, not the players.
If you have been here in denver so long and don't support the broncos that may be because of decisions they have made like getting players with bad character (carter, gardener, romanowski, clarett etc...), losing in the playoffs and even getting rid of players and contracts like plummer, portis and lelie, every team has its struggles and even though denver has gone 16 and 16 in the last 2 years its no reason to be so hateful. the broncos are imo getting better and after a draft like they had a few years ago(cutler, dumervil, scheffler, marshall) they are on the right path for success if they can keep developing and getting players with good characters like they did in this draft. before the 16-16 stretch we were in the afc championship. its not like we are in a 10 year winning draught here.

OK, I am not really a Bronco fan, although I do root for them. But I do live in Denver and enjoy following the team. Here are my $.02 for what they're worth:
I think Shanahan is a good coach, and should continue to stay with the Broncos. I don't think he's a very good GM though. I don't know how much "horsepower" Sundquist had in the past, but from what I've read, the past few drafts have been Shanahan's--and they haven't been very productive.
Hire a real GM (maybe someone out of the Patriot's front office;) ) and let Shanahan coach the players our new GM drafts.
I'd love to compare winning percentages of organizations that employed a Coach/GM vs. those that split the duties (like the Patriots do) for the last 10 years or so. Would be interesting, as I imagine the teams that split the duties would have a better record over the last decade then those who do not. Just my opinion, obviously. I just don't care enough to do the work myself.
I'm sure someone will take issue with my definition of "productive", and if so, so be it. I'm not going to get into a cyber-argument over it, as it's just my opinion and not worth the effort to me. But I would enjoy any thoughts as to Shanahan's "success" as a NFL GM.

It seems to me that in the past three years or so since Gary Kubiak has been gone, that things just haven't been the same. I feel that we need to get Kubiak back.
Shanahan is a good coach and he has lots of talented players. There are a few weak spots that need improved upon but Shanahan needs Kubiak for the offense. Thats when things were great. If Kubiak could call plays and coach Cutler, wow...Broncos would be putting points and wins up.

Their are a lot of people losing faith in what the Broncos are doing, let's not forget that they were in the AFC championship just a couple of years ago, and that was with bootleg master plummer. That reaches at another point, Shanahan is a great play caller, not necessarily on defense but he gets the most out of his players abilities. Frankly, the 06 draft was a masterpiece in my eyes, and yes Shanahan does take gambles at the draft table but I feel like 06-08 have been huge especially with what he has done with the trenches. I just feel like we are in need of linebacker depth now. Oh and anyone talkin about the raiders will have a better record then the Broncos can choke on their words when McFadden busts'.

you anti shanny people are spoiled. you are spoiled to the fact that we have only had two losing seasons since Shanny got here.
What do you think guarentees that a coaching change will bring about Super Bowls?
You want to know why we are a mediocre team now? Its because Shanny finds a way to win all the time with substandard players.
Our own success has hamstrung our drafts by being too good to be in the bottom of the league, ensuring a good draft spot, but not good enough to win it all.
Shanny did that... now since he has had a second losing season, all you morons are calling for him to be fired.
Typical spoiled behavior.
Go ahead, Fire shanahan.. bite that hand that feeds you..
Just be sure to raise your hand after the new coach has us in the cellar and i ask, who brought this about?
Thank God Bowlen, a man smart enough to have made more money than EVERYONE WHO CHIMED IN ON THIS BLOG COMBINED, is smart enough to keep Shanahan, and i quote..
AS long as MIKE wants the job. According to Pat, he is afraid that SHANNY WILL DECIDE TO RETIRE.
Thank god hes in charge and not the Shanahaters.
