The Rockies today acquired right-handed pitcher Sean Smith from the Cleveland Indians.
Smith, 24, is the player to be determined in the trade that sent infielder Jamey Carroll to Cleveland on Dec. 8, 2007. Smith will be assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Smith made four starts this season for Triple-A Buffalo of the International League, going 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in 18 innings. He struck out 20 and walked 10 and limited opponents to a .222 average.
This is Smith's second consecutive year at the Triple-A level, and he has been in the Cleveland organization since being drafted by the club in the 16th round of the 2001 June draft.
For his career, the California native has gone 44-31 with a 3.84 ERA in 137 games, 126 of them starts. He compiled one of his best seasons in 2006, finishing fifth in the Indians Player Development System in wins (11) and fifth in innings pitched (169.0). He was also named to the Eastern League All-Star team and Futures Game that season.
