DETROIT — Already an underdog against the Detroit Red Wings, the Avalanche got some discouraging news even before the first puck was dropped Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena.
Left wing Peter Forsberg suffered a groin injury during the morning skate and didn’t dress for Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal series.
Forsberg played in all six games against the Minnesota Wild in the quarterfinal series and chipped in with a goal and four assists.
Forsberg’s place in the lineup was taken by Cody McCormick, but Ryan Smyth moved to his spot on a line with Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk.

What does anyone expect from Forsberg? Historically he's one of the whimpiest players in the NHL when it comes to "injuries". He'll take himself out for a freakin hangnail. But who knows the real extent of his injury? Could it be his foot AGAIN? Speaking of foot, Adam Foote was hoorible last night. Good luck Av's and to you Threesberg.
