Colorado has been awarded a $14.3 million federal grant to improve public safety communication systems.
"The projects that will be funded in Colorado through this grant award will make our public safety agencies better prepared for any incident that may occur within the state," said Gov. Bill Ritter.
The award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will go toward implementing the Statewide Communication Interoperability Plan.
The money will be used to purchase digital radios, communications towers and antennas, make upgrades to emergency operations centers, and provide communications training and exercises to first-responders.
The grant is among $968 million that the Department of Homeland Security is awarding nationwide to enhance the communications capabilities of first- responders and public safety agencies in every state and U.S. territory.
Eighty percent of the money will go to local public safety agencies that have to provide 20 percent in matching funds.

As a citizen, I hope public safety agencies target some of this money to improve their communications software and data integration as well. Many of these agencies are still sitting on silos of crime information. This data is of much more value to responding officers when it is portable and shared "real time" across city borders and boundaries.
