Eagles stumble, drop Game 3 in Texas

After dominating early, the Colorado Eagles fizzled in a 5-2 loss to the Texas Brahmas in Game 3 of their Northern Conference finals series in the Central Hockey League playoffs Wednesday night in North Richland Hills, Texas.

Goaltender Sebastien Laplante struggled early and was pulled in favor of Bryan Bridges in the second period.

Kris Wiebe scored for the Eagles, who have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 is at 6 p.m. Friday in Texas.

SKY SOX LOSE Despite a strong performance from starting pitcher Valerio De Los Santos, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox lost a Pacific Coast League game 5-1 to the Portland Beavers at Security Service Field.

THOMAS CALLED UP Colorado 14ers guard Billy Thomas was called up to the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers and signed for the remainder of the season and the playoffs, as well as for the 2008-09 season.

RAMS SWEEP BEARS The Colorado State softball team beat Northern Colorado 11-3 in Fort Collins to complete a season sweep of the Bears.

Sophomore Rebecca Penland went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Rams (21-16).

Northern Colorado fell to 7-31.

SNOW DAYS The Air Force-Colorado Christian baseball game at Falcon Field was postponed midway through the third inning because of snowfall. The Cougars held a 1-0 lead with two out.

A makeup date for the game has not determined.

* The snowstorm also forced the postponement of CU-Colorado Springs' softball doubleheader against Colorado Mines in Colorado Springs.

The games will be made up at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Lion Field.

MPSF SELECTIONS Air Force seniors Katie Donnell and Kelly Lewis joined junior Abigail Rogers on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference gymnastics team.

* Air Force men's basketball player Tim Anderson was awarded the Bob Spear Award, given to the student-athlete who is outstanding in academics, athletics and military performance.

TREGO HIRED Jim Trego has been hired as the senior associate athletic director for external affairs at the Air Force Academy, overseeing marketing, promotions, ticketing and communications.

Trego previously served as the associate athletic director for development and community relations at Baylor.
