Story Tools

Rose knows Don Cheadle. When Barry Rose, the awesome starter at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, walked on the course as a single Saturday morning, little did he know he'd be put together with a threesome that included Academy Award nominee and East High grad Don Cheadle, and his dad, Don Sr., who lives in Denver.

"I walked up to the threesome and said, 'I know you,' " the stunned Rose said.

But the movie star had shown up for a round of golf wearing jeans and a collarless shirt - strictly verboten at GVR. "He went into the pro shop and bought pants, a golf shirt, shoes and rental clubs," Rose said. A few hundred dollars later, Cheadle was ready to hit the links.

"He could hit the ball," Rose said. "I'd like to see him when he's playing with his own clubs." Don Jr., who had never played GVR, told Rose that he liked the track.

"I told him my favorite movie of his is Swordfish with John Travolta. I asked him about working with Travolta. (Cheadle) said, 'He's OK.' "

TRIBUTE TIME: It was the groovy '70s all over again at Nederland's Pioneer Inn on Friday and Saturday as the Dan Fogelberg tribute shows unfolded. The legendary inn was packed to the rafters with locals and music lovers. Classic rock poured out of the door as Vince Herman, Melissa Selby, Jason Wilder and Will Salter performed Fogelberg songs.

It celebrated the late Fogelberg but also the rich history of the inn and nearby Caribou Ranch recording studio. Missed the sold-out shows? CD on Demand recorded both nights. Copies are for sale through Mountain Ear newspaper (303-258- 7075) and via the Web at cdodlive.com. The Nederland visitors center has commemorative T-shirts for sale.

SEOUL MAN: Denver DA Mitch Morrissey dropped by the Denver Press Club Thursday night to say bon voyage to former Rocky reporter Lou Kilzer who is departing for Seoul, South Korea, where he will be editor-in-chief of the English language JoongAng Daily.

Morrissey joked about some of the tough stories Kilzer had written about his office, but noted that the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner was always fair and dug deep for stories. Morrissey also gave Kilzer a coffee cup with the district attorney's office logo on it. "It was actually a good thing to see as they had some disagreements over the years without becoming disagreeable," one of my spies said.

THE SEEN: Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki watching the Spurs-Jazz game after the Rocks' home opener Friday at ESPN Zone.

Also at ESPN Zone, Broncos Dre' Bly wearing his alma mater UNC T-shirt, Domonique Foxworth, and Bailey bros Boss and Champ taking in the Final Four Saturday.

Avalanche captain Joe Sakic golfing with David Hart, son of golf course owner Stacey Hart, Saturday at Cherry Creek Country Club.

EAVESDROPPING on a man at Elway's Cherry Creek: "I was just in Vegas. I felt like I should be walking around in a body condom. That town gets seedier and seedier."

Penny Parker's column appears Tuesday through Saturday. Listen to her on the Caplis and Silverman radio show between 4 and 5 p.m. Fridays on KHOW-AM (630). Call her at 303-954-5224 or e-mail parkerp@RockyMountainNews.com.
