DNC visitors should see DIA solar system

Despite some "unavoidable" delays, the company in charge of building a solar energy system at Denver International Airport expects to complete the project in time for the Democratic National Convention.

WorldWater & Solar Technologies Corp. said Wednesday it has broken ground on the $13 million project, which will span 71/2 acres and feature nearly 10,000 solar panels visible from Pena Boulevard. The 2-megawatt system will generate 3.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually - enough electricity to power 1,000 homes or more.

The company said it is on track to have the system up and running by August, when 30,000-plus visitors will flood the city for the DNC.

Once complete, MMA Renewable Ventures will own the system and sell power from it to DIA.

The two companies are taking on the upfront costs of the project, and DIA will get additional revenue through leasing the site.
