In need of another big body, the Nuggets on Wednesday waived point guard Mike Wilks and today signed center Jelani McCoy.
"Right now, we don't have a lot of size," said coach George Karl, who said McCoy will help make up for big men Nene and Steven Hunter being hurt and Kenyon Martin - he is expected to return tonight against the Los Angeles Lakers after a one-game absence - limited. "It might serve us to have a 7-footer rather than a 6-8 guy."
The 6-10 McCoy, a seven- year veteran who was in Denver's training camp, had five blocks Tuesday in an NBA Development League game for the Los Angeles D-Fenders attended by Nuggets executive Mark Warkentien.
McCoy is expected to be in uniform tonight. It was not immediately known whether his prorated $1.03 million contract will be guaranteed for the rest of the season.
"I realize they need a big man," said Wilks, who said Washington has some interest in him. "I enjoyed my time there and understand it is a business."
