Friends and family of the late Larry Manzanares announced Tuesday that they have established a scholarship in memory of the former Denver judge and city attorney.
The fund was created with help from the Latin American Educational Foundation.
Contributors have given $65,000 toward the goal of $80,000 needed to establish the fund.
"He was a strong believer in the value of education, and his personal experience - struggling to pay for his own education, through work, loans, scholarships and the help of his family - resonated with him as a successful professional," said Jim Chavez, executive director of the foundation.
The funds will provide financial assistance to Hispanic college students.
Contributions can be sent to the Latin American Educational Foundation at 561 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO 80204.
Manzanares killed himself June 22, a week after being charged in the theft of a court- owned laptop computer.
