Chase DeForest's Scrabble- oriented Long Weekend

Sporting and Recreation

* What: Furniture by Chase DeForest

* Where and when: Ironton Studios and Gallery, 3636 Chestnut Place; through Dec. 15

* Definitely a game try: The artists who program Ironton's small but sleek gallery have been on a roll lately, considering the late summer shows "Digit-all Art" and "Glacial."

Now, with the unusual, smart and charming "Sporting and Recreation," area viewers have a chance to see work by a relative newcomer to the Denver art scene: Chase DeForest, who makes her bow with an exhibition of furniture that plays into both our mania for sports and games, and our interest in fine craftsmanship.

DeForest, who earned a master of fine arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design, teaches in the industrial design department of Metropolitan State College of Denver and won a 2008 American Craft Council Emerging Artist grant.

But there is nothing "emerging" in "Sporting in Recreation," where Scrabble boards adorn the Long Weekend chest, vintage water skis morph into resort-ready Hydrorondacks chairs and sensible, protective Gore-Tex fabric serves as upholstery for the A Comfortable Tent side chairs.

I can hardly wait for round two.
