As he walked to class, University of Colorado student Isaac Bean found himself remembering just why he'd support a campuswide ban on smoking, both indoors and outside.
"I got stuck behind this girl and her nasty cigarette for this three-minute walk of smoke," said Bean, 23. "It was disgusting."
According to the results of an unscientific survey conducted across CU's campuses and administrative offices, a narrow majority - 51.5 percent - of respondents said they think the school should ban all tobacco use on the campuses. Smoking indoors already is prohibited.
The survey was in response to CU Regent Michael Carrigan's proposal to ban smoking altogether. Results were released Thursday.
Carrigan said the survey wasn't perfect because its participants weren't randomly selected. CU officials sent an e-mail to students, staff and faculty members, and received 8,726 responses.

Many nonsmokers are not as vocal as this young man. Because we are basically kind beings, we try to overlook the bad manners and habits of others. With a survey such as the recent one at CU, most of the respondants are likey to be smokers who feel that their addiction is being threatened.
Because it is an immature environment, there may be as many as 24-25% regular smokers on campus. That still leaves a vast majority of nonsmokers who are being physically assaulted by the noxious vapors that are emitted by tobacco.
Regardless of what some brown-lunged fools who manufacture their own version of "truth" may try to rebutt, smoking and tobacco use harms everyone. All anyone has to do is google a few searches for various ills caused by tobacco, and the case that is built against its use, which is always abuse, is impenetratble.
Disregard the panicked babbling of addicts.
