Saving money at the pump
Is that cheap gallon of gas worth it?
The table at the bottom of this page shows the cheapest gasoline prices in the Denver metro area, according to GasBuddy.com. If one of the gas stations happens to be along your daily commute, you might consider using them. However Rocky columnist David Milstead points out that it’s probably not worth your while to drive more than a tenth of a mile out of your way for a cheap gallon of gas.
Milstead’s calculations take wear and tear on the vehicle, the value of the driver’s time and the amount of gas a driver burns to get to the service station with the cheapest gas. We offer this simplified calculator which just analyzes how much money you’ll spend to reach that cheap station.
What you’ll need.
- The total number of miles you will travel out of your way to reach the station with the cheap gas. (We recommend using Google maps if you don’t know.)
- Either the size of your gas tank or the amount of gasoline you plan to put into your car.
- The amount of money you will save per gallon of gas over the station you regularly use. For example, if the station around the block from your home is charging $4.01 per gallon of gas and the cheap gas station is charging $3.76, you would save 25 cents a gallon.
- Your car’s mileage. If you don’t know, consider using the national average of 20.2 miles per gallon, according to a 2007 EPA report.
* Calculation based on Colorado average price of $4.00 per gallon, as reported by GasBuddy.com on June 17, 2008. The price is used to calculate the cost of the gas you will burn to reach the station with the cheap gas.
