Level 3 Communications is helping Internet daters take their conversations offline.

The Broomfield-based fiber- optic network operator on Tuesday announced it launched an Internet-based phone service for online dating service Lavalife.

Lavalife, which has more than 600,000 active members, assigns dedicated phone numbers to customers so they don't have to hand out their own number to a virtual stranger.

Lavalife's phone service also lets customers send and receive voice- mail messages.

Toronto-based Lavalife already offered the dedicated phone lines through various other carriers, but the switch to Level 3's Internet-based phone service will help the dating service save money on telephone-related equipment.

"Lavalife is a forward-thinking company using powerful technology to solve its real-world business problems," said Myrle McNeal, senior vice president of voice service provider markets for Level 3, in a statement.

Level 3 also provides high-capacity lines and services to video-intensive Internet companies, including MySpace and YouTube.com.
