Simons: Tenure flickers for candle shop
Published January 13, 2007 at midnight
Few struggling retailers are desperate enough to shut their doors on holiday shoppers. But as soon as December ends, the going-out-of-business sales begin.
Feb. 28 will be the last day at Wicks 'n' Sticks candle and fragrance shop in Westminster Mall, 303-650-5542, marking the end of a 20-year tenure. The shop's hard-to-find candles and related accessories are discounted by 25 percent to 75 percent.
This store is the last outpost of a Houston-based retailer that once had four stores in the metro area. If you're a fan, get over there before "your" item is all gone.
Shades of Yesteryear, which has been selling antique American oak furniture for 15 years, also is going out of business.
All pieces are marked down by 33 percent. The owner is in a haggling mood, however, because anything that remains on Jan. 24, the store's last day, will go to an out-of-state auction. The shop is in the Antique Exchange, 1500 S. Broadway, 303-777-7871.
While you're in the building, check out the deals at Brooklyn's Antiques, 303-777-7871, which is offering discounts of 10 percent to 25 percent on European furniture through Jan. 31.
Antiques, designer furniture, home accessories, artwork and other items from 50 vendors are marked down by 10 percent to 60 percent through Jan. 28 for the winter sale at The Collection, 899 Broadway, 303-623-4200.
