Style Matters: Low-cost fashion tape a way to hold up the pull of gravity
Published June 1, 2006 at midnight
Judie: Here's another in our series of cheap tips. Ever wonder why Pamela Anderson doesn't fall out of her tops? She's probably been turned on to Hollywood fashion tape: clear, double-stick strips that hold anything in place. Secure slipping bra straps, wrapped skirts, gapping blouses, and plunging necklines with some of these babies. They also work great as a quick fix for a torn hem. The company claims that the strips are gentle on skin and fabrics and last all day.
Find them at Pampered Passions, Violet and Accents for Her.
Evelinda: For rings that slip, slide or fall off, try Ring Guard Solution, a gel that's applied to the inside of the band before wearing. The gel dries to a clear solid and secures the ring in place with no visible plastic or metal showing. Peel off the harmless solution after removing the ring; $7 at earringsaccessories.com. This Web site also sells a variety of earring converters that can turn post earrings into clip-ons.
Judie: We found this tip in the college newspaper of Mr. Style Matters Jr. The Web site eyeslipsface.com sells makeup and cosmetic tools such as brushes and eyelash curlers each for $1. Almost everything on this site is a dollar. We haven't ordered anything yet, because the shipping at $5 is more than the products. We suggest you do a group order and split the shipping fees.
Evelinda: You can even find deals at the first-aid aisle at your local pharmacy or grocery store. I bought Liquid Bandage, normally used to form a waterproof seal on hard-to- cover cuts, and applied a tiny bit to an unsightly pimple. On top of the liquid bandage, I applied concealer, which stayed on longer and gave better coverage; $4.99 at Walgreens.
Judie: Here are a couple of free tips. Own a great blouse or sweater, but the neckline is too plunging for work? Wear the top backward. If you are worried that the tag will show or itch, go back to Cheap Tip No. 1. Hollywoodfashiontape.com also sells Tag Tamers that adhere to the tag with a comfortable, cushiony cover. $8.95 on the Web site.
Evelinda: Time-sharing has now spread to fashion. We first came across this concept when we heard about two teenage girls from different high schools who shared a prom dress. Now, according to fashion writer Amy Larocca, the trend is spreading across socio-economic classes. Even celebrities such as Nicole Kidman are sharing dresses with their good friends. In Kidman's case it was a Prada dress lent to Naomi Watts.
Judie: Unfortunately, I don't have access to Nicole's closet: only yours.
Meet Evelinda and Judie at a book signing and discussion at the Aurora Borders, Arapahoe and Parker, 1-3 p.m. June 10. www.stylematters.us
