Lehndorff: Bountiful bread harvest

A recent e-mail from a Denver newcomer revealed that she had been the unfortunate recipient of some patently false information:

"We just moved here from New Jersey and we are serious bread-lovers. When we asked our Denver friends where we could find really great bread, they said: 'There isn't any.' They blamed it on the altitude. Is that really true?"

The answer, in a word, is "NO!" All manner of scrumptious loaves are available in the metro area. If you have a true lust for loaves like I do, you'll go the extra mile to find them.

Among my favorites:

Denver Bread Company: 3200 Irving St., Denver; 303-455-7194. Top-flight artisan boules, batards, baguettes and specialty breads, including a round five-grain loaf.

Breadworks: 2644 Broadway, Boulder; 303-444-5667. A full roster of excellent hand-formed artisan breads, including baguettes, Irish oatmeal bread, ciabatta, and seeded French.

Udi's Bakery: Known for a range of outstanding breads, including soft challah, light rye boule, cranberry raisin walnut, and foccacia. Find the breads at local markets, Udi's Bread Bistro, and Udi's Bakery.

Les Delices De Paris: 5303 Leetsdale Drive, Denver; 303-320-7596. Genuine crisp-crusted baguette with a soft, airy interior.

Gargaro's Italian Bakery: 5058 Marshall St., Arvada; 303-424-9881. Authentic Italian white loaf, plain and sesame seeded.

Dolce Sicilia Italian Bakery, 3210 Wadsworth Blvd., Wheat Ridge; 303-233-3755. Authentic chewy, flour-dusted ciabatta loaf produced by a Sicilian-born baker.

Dimmer's Home Bakery in Denver produces fantastic, hearty German-style loaves including the tart Country Rye, Farmer's Rye and hearty German Rye breads. You can pick up their varied breads at both Wild Oats Markets and Vitamin Cottage stores.

Since I'm on a roll, but out of room, I'll continue my roster of great breads in next Friday's column.
