Kennedy: Denver scores in fashion
Published January 19, 2006 at midnight
Broncos fever is making Denver delirious with dreams of scoring a Super Bowl berth.
But let's take a moment and forget about which city is better at football. What I want to know is, how do they stack up when it comes to style?
A real victory has to do with who has better footwear, whose facial hair fumbles and, of course, who has the better accessories (does a Terrible Towel top a foam horse head?).
The answers are clear on our style scale. Advantage: Denver.
Footwear
Denver: Cowboy boots
Pittsburgh: Steel-toe boots
Advantage: Denver. Jessica Simpson helped make cowboy boots sexy and stylish. Steelers: These Broncos boots are gonna walk all over you.
Facial hair
Denver: Quarterback Jake Plummer wears his hair long and his beard thick. He has said his facial hair is a tribute to his former teammate, Pat Tillman, who died in combat in Afghanistan. "This year I've been playing well when I've had it," he tells USA Today, "so why not?"
Pittsburgh: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger also sports a bushy beard. Why? "Because it's cold in Pittsburgh," he has told reporters.
Advantage: Denver. A tribute to a hero and a winning streak beats pesky practicality every time.
Accessories
Denver: Foam horse head
Pittsburgh: Terrible Towel
Advantage: Pittsburgh. A foam horse head is pretty lame and too close to Green Bay's foam cheese heads. The towel has more spirit and doesn't make you look so goofy. Plus, it packs well in a purse, so you won't look dorky carrying it around after the game.
Reality TV couples
Denver: Trista Rehn married Coloradan (and former football standout) Ryan Sutter from The Bachelorette, left.
Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh area native Amber Brkich married fellow Survivor All-Stars contestant (and Bostonian) Rob Mariano. They also appeared on The Amazing Race.
Advantage: Even. Both men proposed on their respective shows, both couples' weddings were aired on TV specials, and both pairs are still together, which is, like, a record in TV-land marriages.
Colors
Denver: Blue and orange
Pittsburgh: Black and gold
Advantage: Pittsburgh. Sorry, I'm biased on this one. The Steelers' uniforms served as a template for my alma mater's team. Go, you Iowa Hawkeyes!
Cheerleaders
Denver: The Bronco babes wear cropped T-shirts, vests, tiny fringed skirts and tall white boots.
Pittsburgh: The Steelers don't even have cheerleaders.
Advantage: Goooooooooo, Denver!
