Style Matters: Three Web sites step forward with shoe-shopping legwork
Published January 5, 2006 at midnight
Judie: The other night my furnace broke. Some dedicated guys worked past midnight to replace it so my family wouldn't freeze. Of course, I was assigned to stay up until they left - the perfect time to shoe shop online.
Evelinda: Now even if you live in the smallest town in the most remote part of your state, you can wear the same shoes as East Coast socialites and Hollywood celebrities. We narrowed down Judie's browsing to three great sites: 6pm.com, zappos.com and georginagoodman.com
6PM.com: Based in Greenwood Village, the newest entry into the online shoe market is 6PM.com, with a unique gimmick. When shoppers choose shoes, the Web site automatically suggests matching handbags and vice versa. Shoppers can even vote on how well they think the site matched up the shoes and handbags. The site carries all the top name brands, many on sale up to 73 percent off.
But the best feature is that shipping is free, both on the return and delivery ends. This means if you are not sure whether you're a 7 or a 7 1/2, order both sizes and keep the pair that fits. Won't cost you a dime extra. Plus 6PM guarantees if you find the shoe lower-priced elsewhere online, the Web site will match the price less 10 percent.
Sizes range from 3-13 and AAAA narrow to EE wide; prices range from $29.99 for Minnetonka moccasins to $800 for a pair of Donald J. Pliners or Bruno Maglis. Purses by designers such as Francesco Biasia and Kathy Van Zeeland start at about $30 and can go as high as $580 for a Kenneth Cole.
Zappos.com: The home page is busier than 6PM's, but that could be because it stocks 1.8 million shoes. You can sort the shoes by price, size, width and color. Prices start as low as $29.99 and go up to $832 for a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti boots. The site also offers free delivery and return shipping with the same price guarantee. Get on the e-mail list for the site's frequent sales. Check out the couture sales selections - we saw a pair of red Casadei sandals for $77 that were $502.
Georginagoodman.com: This Web site features the most gorgeous shoes we have ever seen. They are works of art; we don't know whether to wear them or frame them. It's an English company, so prices are quoted in pounds, and the exchange rate does not favor us.
Judie: A pair of blue-striped suede leather wedges costs $610. When I finally got to sleep, guess what I dreamed about?
