ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
David Marone, Broomfield
The defending Class 4A champion mustered a win in the 215-pound class at the Top of the Rockies Invitational wrestling tournament.
Marone (32-1) beat previously unbeaten and nationally ranked Skip Crooks, of Green River, Wyo., 3-1 on a takedown with 13 seconds remaining in the match.
It was the second year the two, who had pinned their way through the tournament, wrestled for the title.
Crooks (30-1) has been ranked as high as No. 5 in the country by Wrestling USA.
Brittany Long, Faith Christian
The 5-foot-7 junior led the Eagles to four wins in Class 3A girls basketball, scoring 23, 24, 25 and 22 points against Denver Lutheran, Platte Valley, Strasburg and Machebeuf during the past four games.
Long, a first-team all-state selection last season, is No. 3 in scoring average in 3A at 20.5 points.
And she is averaging 3.4 steals and 2.6 assists.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Alamosa boys basketball team upset previously unbeaten and top-ranked Pueblo South 69-66 in overtime in a Class 4A South Central League showdown.
The Mean Moose were led by Jason Espinoza, the reigning SCL player of the year, who scored 37 points. Spencer McDaniel added 16 points in the victory. Dustin Bolt hit a three-pointer for Alamosa in the closing seconds of regulation to force overtime.
