NEWS & NOTES
Bob Bote, the head baseball coach at Niwot the past 28 years, has resigned his position. He will continue to teach at Niwot but will not be out of baseball.
Bote, 52, has been an assistant football coach at Erie this season with Larry Gartrell and now will assist on the diamond under Larry Green. Bote has three sons, Mark, David and Luke, who attend Erie. His two oldest children, Danny and Sarah, are Niwot graduates.
"The boys want to play for their dad, and I've been assisting football at Erie, so it seemed like the thing to do," Bote said. "This is a family thing, too, something that my wife, Therese, wants. And I think it's time for a change. I'll miss coaching at Niwot, but I still plan to teach at the school for a few more years."
Under Bote, Niwot won five state baseball titles and played in eight final fours. His teams won 18 league championships, had six 20-win seasons and only one losing year (1981). His career record at Niwot was 459-123.
"Erie has won five state titles and they have an up-and-coming program," Bote said. "Things evolve, doors open and doors close. It will be strange for a while on a different ballfield, but always enjoyable."
Erin Neumann of Wray and Bobby Adamson of Byers have been selected the Colorado winners of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. The award recognizes achievements in athletics, academics and community service. Neumann and Adamson are eligible for the national award.
The Colorado finalists: Boys - Frederick Garcia (Alamosa), Matt Stiasny (Dove Creek), Cody Collins (Julesburg), Blake Schlup (Springfield), Brett Marshbanks (Swink), Zack Esgar (Wiley), Chris Pickett (Maranatha Christian) and Anguel Tolev (Thornton).
