ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Aromous Robinson, Bear Creek

Robinson, who leads Class 5A in scoring at 26.3 points a game, posted two superb performances last week.

Robinson, a 6-foot senior guard, scored 39 points in a victory against Rangeview, followed by a 36-point effort in a win against Arvada.

Robinson scored a season-most 44 points earlier this month.

Rachel Espinoza, Pueblo Central

Espinoza, a 5-7 junior, scored 25 points Saturday to lead the then-unranked Wildcats to a 78-44 victory against No. 8 Pueblo West. She earlier scored 22 points in a win against Pueblo County and leads Class 4A in scoring (22.9).

Pueblo Central lost its opener to Thomas Jefferson but has won nine in a row since then.

WORTH THE DRIVE

When it comes to regular-season wrestling tournaments, the two-day Top of the Rockies at Centaurus High School rates among the finest.

Six of the state's top 10 ranked teams in 5A, five from 4A and two from Class 3A, lead the field of 30 teams representing Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. In addition, seven state individual champions from Colorado will be in the field.

Since weight classes for wrestlers are locked in for the remainder of the season, this should be a preview of the state tournament. In the field are 19 wrestlers who are ranked No. 1 and 14 who are ranked No. 2 at their weight by On The Mat.

Wrestling begins at 3 p.m. Friday. The finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.
