THORNTON When it came to the individual events in Saturdays Class 5A state gymnastics meet at Thornton High School, the wealth was spread around. However, in the 4A meet, it was a two-girl affair.
Lovelands Hannah Bower, who won the 5A all-around title on Friday, could only come through with one event win, Floor, with a score of 9.75. In last years meet, Bower was a three-event winner.
On Floor, Bower edged cross town rival Gentry Knaub of Thompson Valley, who scored 9.725. Third went to Michelle Tharp of Fort Collins, thus giving Northern Colorado schools a sweep of the top three.
State team champion Green Mountain had an individual winner with
Kelly Stone taking top honors on vault with a 9.7. Pine Creeks
Kristin Milardo place second (9.65) and Tharp third (9.65), where the
superior judge score proved
the difference between the two.
Tharp, however, was not without a title as the Fort Collins freshman won the balance beam with a 9.65 over Bower, also with a 9.65. Again, the superior judge score proved to be the difference. Stone was third with a 9.55.
Milardo also came through with an individual event win taking the title on the uneven bars with a 9.8. Tharp was second (9.775) and Bower third (9.75).
Anna Simmons of Mountain Range, who won the 4A all-around title earlier in the day, won three individual events. She lost the third to Pueblo Centrals all-around runner-up Tera Sisson.
Simmons might have had a sweep of the events, but she made a crucial mistake on Floor which cost her the title to Sisson. She was decucted two tenths, mandatory points for adjusting her uniform during her routine. She lost a third tenth of a point, when her underware was showing.
As a result, Sisson took the win with a score of 9.55 to Simmons 9.425 and Mountain Ranges Brittany Logan finished third (9.4).
However, Simmons went virtually untouched in the other three events. She won Vault with a 9.725, the uneven bars, 9.375 and the balance beam, 9.525. In each event but the beam, Sisson was second. She was sixth here.
Sterlings Lyndsey Meier was second on beam (9.375) while Pueblo Centrals Jennifer Rockwell was third (9.225).
Sterlings Michelle Chapman placed third on the uneven bars (9.225) while Logan was third on Floor (9.4).
