Proven diamond gems
Anundsen, Sowers and Gillman demonstrate why they're tops in their fields

He was 0-2 on the mound, his team was sputtering and his senior year was going nowhere near how he envisioned it.
Little did Evan Anund-sen know, two months later, he and his Columbine baseball teammates proudly would be hoisting the Class 5A state championship trophy while Anund-sen was designated the most valuable player of the state tournament.
He turned around his early misfortunes in such a drastically positive manner that he also earned the honor of Rocky Mountain News All-Colorado pitcher of the year.
"It was one of those years where everything just fell into place, even though it started a little rocky with my pitching and our team," said Anundsen, who went 10-2 with a 1.67 earned-run average and had a 5A-best 150 strikeouts.
"It's awesome just to be named the best pitcher in the state," Anundsen added. "That's what every pitcher out here strives to do, and I just had the season to do it."
So into it was Anundsen that he was chosen in the fourth round of the amateur draft by Milwaukee on Tuesday and is considering signing a professional contract. If not, he has a spot waiting for him at tradition-rich Wichita State.
Anundsen is joined by his coach, Chuck Gillman, the All-Colorado coach of the year, and Cherry Creek shortstop Brett Sowers, the All-Colorado player of the year. Sowers hit 10 home runs and recorded a Bruins- record 46 RBI.
Sowers, who is expected to play at Nebraska next season, was in Los Angeles this week working out for the Dodgers. He missed the Colorado Rockies Top 50 Senior Game to attend the session.
Gillman guided the Rebels to a 19-7 mark and a 5-4 win against Mountain Vista to claim the state title. He celebrated by having his knees replaced - OK, maybe that doesn't qualify as a positive rejoicing session - but the hassle of getting around the house was tempered a bit by his delight about the title.
Gillman's son C.J., a junior catcher for the Rebels who scored the winning run in the championship game, also made the squad.
"It doesn't get much better than that for a coach," Chuck Gillman said. "Win the championship and coach of the year and have your son on the teams."
Other notables on the squad were Monarch shortstop Wade Landowski, who hit a 5A-best 13 home runs and added a 425-foot shot in the Top 50 game; Golden first baseman Kevin Coughlin, who hit nine home runs and led 4A with 45 RBI; and Roosevelt pitcher Cody Schlagel, the lone 3A selection, who went 9-0 with an 0.65 ERA in helping the Roughriders to the 3A crown against longtime-rival Eaton.
Sowers and Evergreen third baseman Tim Wulf were repeat selections.
