CHILD DRINKERS LIKELY TO BECOME ALCOHOLICS
47% of people who began drinking alcohol before age 14 became dependent on it at some point later in life.
9% of those who started drinking at age 21 or older later became alcohol-dependent.
For each year earlier than age 21 individuals started drinking, the greater the risk of eventual alcoholism.
"This study reinforces important concerns about youth starting to drink at early ages."
- Ralph W. Hingson and colleagues at the Boston University School of Public Health, based on data from 43,000 U.S. adults ages 18 or older from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions in 2001 and 2002, reported in the July issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine
