Buyout seen as 'kind of ironic'

A Latin American company's buyout of Swift & Co. closely follows the company's announcement that it is beginning to recover from the high-profile immigration raids that depleted its work force in recent months.

About 1,300 workers were removed from the payrolls in a federal sweep of Swift's plants in late December. Earlier this month, Swift said it had returned to normal staffing levels at all of its plants nationwide.

"It's kind of ironic," Rutilio Martinez, an associate professor at the University of Northern Colorado's Monfort College of Business, said of the news of Swift's takeover by a South American country.

Martinez and others said the deal between Brazil's JBS South America and Swift represents increased globalization more than anything else. "It makes sense given today's business climate," said Yvan Murad, an immigration attorney based in Boulder.
