CALGARY, Alberta - Jordan Leopold has been sent back to Denver to have a hand injury re- evaluated, joining fellow Avalanche defenseman Karlis
Skrastins (separated shoulder) on the shelf.
Leopold was hurt in the third period Tuesday in Edmonton when he was hit into the boards.
"It was kind of a freaky thing," coach Joel Quenneville said Thursday. "So we're down a couple of defensemen. I still feel our group of six is capable of getting the job done."
Leopold missed two games earlier this season because of a hip injury and he played in only 15 games last season.
Jose Theodore will start in goal for the Avalanche tonight against the Flames, but right wing Milan Hejduk likely will sit out for the fourth time in five games because of a back ailment. Hejduk did some skating Thursday but didn't take part in practice.
