CENTENNIAL - Though he continues to make progress in practice sessions, Avalanche goalie Jose Theodore isn't expected to be in uniform for Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Dallas Stars at the Pepsi Center.
Coach Joel Quenneville said Monday that Tyler Weiman probably would suit up as the backup for Peter Budaj.
"We'll see how Jose's progressing, but he's getting better every day," Quenneville said. "He looks better each and every day and is getting stronger. We're showing patience, and he's looking like he's very close."
Theodore underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Aug. 29. He didn't start participating in full practices until Thursday and missed all six preseason games.
Weiman, 23, posted a 27-22-3 record with a 2.99 goals-against average and .905 save percentage last season with the Albany (N.Y.) River Rats in the American Hockey League. He played a key role with the Colorado Eagles when they won the Central Hockey League championship in 2005.
Weiman was a fifth-round draft pick (164th overall) of the Avalanche in the 2002 NHL entry draft.
The Avalanche reduced its roster to 24 players Monday by assigning forward Cody McCormick to the Cleveland-based Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL.
NHL teams can carry a maximum of 23 players once the season begins, but Theodore and forward Brad Richardson (wrist) won't count against that total because they were injured before training camp started.
NEW RADIO VOICE: Altitude Sports & Entertainment, a subsidiary of Kroenke Sports Enterprises, has hired Marc Moser as analyst to work alongside Avalanche radio play-by-play announcer Norm Jones on The Fan (KKFN-AM 950).
Moser replaces former NHL defenseman Curtis Leschyshyn, who gave up the position to spend more time with his family.
Moser has been hosting The Fan's weekday morning show with Sandy Clough, who will remain with the station and rotate with former NHL defenseman Brian Engblom as a studio analyst on Altitude telecasts.
