Though Jake Plummer might have every intention of retiring, he has yet to formally inform the NFL.

This despite the fact several people close to the former Broncos quarterback, including some family members, have said in recent days Plummer's retirement was official and he had filed the appropriate paperwork.

League spokesmen Greg Aiello confirmed Monday that Plummer has not sent a written notification to the NFL that he has retired. A player must send a letter to the commissioner saying he has retired and must also complete additional paperwork for pension and health-insurance benefits.

Aiello said the league "has not received a retirement letter from Jake Plummer."

Plummer announced on his Web site last weekend he is retiring, thanked his family and close friends and offered, "I leave the game with my health and happiness and look forward to the future; I've got many rivers to cross."

The Broncos have traded Plummer's rights to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who can keep Plummer on their active roster or move him to the reserve/retired list.

If Plummer returns to the field, he would have to play for Tampa Bay or the Buccaneers would have to release him or trade his rights for the quarterback to play elsewhere.
