Terrell runs pattern and into 8-year-old

ENGLEWOOD - A Littleton family got a scare Wednesday afternoon when Broncos wide receiver David Terrell, trying to haul in a pass along the sideline during a team drill, ran into 8-year-old Allison Sheehan.
Sheehan was knocked to the ground, and after she initially was looked at by the Broncos trainers, as well as a paramedic, she walked to another spot to watch the remainder of practice with her family.
"It was really scary," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "David Terrell ran a fade route over in the end zone and just kind of swiped her off her feet. She got up, she thought she might be hurt, but it looks like she'll be all right."
"I tried to slow down, and I hit her," Terrell said. "I should have just stopped and jumped and then made the play on the ball and then let it go by. . . . I'm sorry about hitting her. She's a tough girl, she needs to come out here and play some football."
During training camp, fans gather on a hillside next to one of the practice fields, and it is a particularly popular spot in the afternoon because the entire area is shaded. So there isn't much room for people to elude a player if the player keeps running toward the crowd.
Terrell said he noticed Sheehan standing just before he looked for the ball, and "when I turned back around, there she was, right there, and I couldn't stop."
Shanahan gave the youngster his hat, Terrell gave her a pair of gloves and she also was given a football. Sheehan also was put at the center of the players after the conclusion of practice to lead them as they shouted "Broncos" before they left the field.
The family had dinner in the Broncos dining hall after practice.
Asked if there was a contract in her future, Shanahan said, "She might be owning the team here shortly."
NO PROBLEM: Broncos kicker Jason Elam felt some pain in his left calf during the morning practice Wednesday after he punted the ball a few times. Elam, who is the team's placekicker, often punts during practice.
Elam was limping noticeably for a short time, then returned to kick field goals later and said he didn't expect to have any trouble.
"I don't know if it's some scar tissue there or what," Elam said. "But I felt a little something, and there was some pain for a little bit. But I kicked after that and felt fine."
Elam strained his left calf in pregame warm-ups in November before the Broncos played the New York Jets. He did extra stretching for much of the remainder of the season but did not miss any games.
STILL HOPING: Running back Ron Dayne has been held out of practice because of turf toe since the Broncos returned from their preseason opener in Detroit.
Shanahan said Wednesday that Dayne would not play Saturday against the Titans and the goal now is to get him back on the field for the Aug. 27 game against the Texans.
"I just have got to deal with it," Dayne said. "I can't complain, just try to get better. After I get back, I'll be ready to go."
"I think if it was a regular-season game, he could play," Shanahan said. "I'm a little tentative to put him in there too quickly."
Dayne had been the No. 1 back on the depth chart until Mike Bell was promoted ahead of him last week, as was Tatum Bell. Dayne had 12 yards rushing on five carries against the Lions.
"It's sore, (if) you can't go, you can't go," Shanahan said. "He can't do anything about that except get treatment and get ready to go next week."
ETC.: Mullen High School graduate Bo Scaife, who has missed most of training camp because of a strained thigh muscle, returned to practice this week and said he expected to be in the Titans lineup at tight end Saturday night against the Broncos. Scaife said he was "about 85 to 90 percent." . . . The Broncos said there still were tickets available to the game Saturday. The tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 303-830- TIXS (8497) or at www.TicketMaster.com . . . Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, who was held out of the preseason opener in Detroit as a precaution, said he expected to be in the lineup Saturday.
Camp report
Today at camp: The Broncos will practice twice at their Dove Valley complex. Morning practice will be at 8:30, with the gates opening at 7:30. The afternoon workout will begin at 3:40 and be special teams only. Special teams practices are abbreviated and do not include the entire roster. Gates open at 2:40. Admission to practices, and parking on the west side of the complex, are free.
Day in review: Cornerback Champ Bailey took advantage of what he said was only a slight hesitation by rookie quarterback Jay Cutler in the morning practice Wednesday. Bailey snatched a Cutler pass along the sideline and went for what would have been a touchdown in team drills. "I told him he hesitated," Bailey said. "And you can't do that." . . . Rookie tight end Tony Scheffler fumbled late after a nice catch-and-run - linebacker Cameron Vaughn recovered - and coach Mike Shanahan quickly responded to the team that "we lost two just like that in the game (Friday)." . . . Cornerback Darrent Williams, linebacker Ray Wells and safety Sam Brandon each had interceptions in the afternoon practice . . . Williams, who has had some quality battles with wide receiver David Kircus during the past two weeks, later tried to knock a pass away from Kircus, but then Kircus caught the deflection as he fell to the ground.
